Check Gascap Message

My 2006 Magnum RT AWD is bringing up "Check Gascap" message in the EVIC . . . it's not setting any codes or turning on the MIL (check engine light) . . . just that darn message . . . I have put a NEW gas cap on the car, no change . . . any ideas would be appreciated . . . I know it has to do with the EVAP emissions, but there aren't any codes coming up . . . everything else totally 100% with the car . . .

There's a leak in the evaporative system. Find someone with a smoke machine to locate the leak, probably an old rotten hose?

maybe ? Haven't taken to shop yet . . or had chance to get under to have a look at the hoses . . . funny that this ONLY started AFTER I had taken car in for trans fluid/filter change (have to look at hoses around that area I think) . . .

Check where the cap seals,just a little rust will set off the message&then the check engine light.Fix a lot of them in ny clean rust with sandpaper coat with vaseline,98% of the time it works.

totally clean, no rust . . . checked when put on new cap . . . . and as said, NO Check Engine Light . .. just the message

Small evap leak in the gas cap area,check hoses in the fuel filler to tank area,might have to have it smoked.

My 2012 Challenger does it once awhile. After a few days it goes off and stays off for several months until it reappears again someday.

Ancel sells affordable smoke machines that pay for themselves within the first use. I had a vehicle that had failing evap codes all the time and instead of firing the parts cannon, had it smoked to find out the FILLER NECK RUSTED THROUGH. I thought it was very weird until I saw Dorman made new ones.......

Under the hood is usually a green cap. I have see them down low near the frame too.

Follow the lines to and from it looking for obvious problems. Those lines should go back to the tank and charcoal canister. I have had people crack the canister's with rocks or ??? so I JB Weld (Plastic Weld) the cracks and good to go. A quick look may save the cost of a smoke machine or smoke test.

Exactly the situation in my case. 2005 grand cherokee 5.7. Evap code and eng light. My buddy smoke tested it at his shop and found the charcoal canister had cracks on it. Vee’d them out and jb welded. All good. Passed inspection. Would have never found it as it was cracked on top of canister. Saw smoke coming from wheelwell area and led us to that location to find it.

It drove me crazy with the gas cap message thing. Usually it is not the gas cap. Finally found the issue on my 2006 truck and it was the fuel pump module. It was cracked on top.

If you research the protocol for the "gas cap alarm", you'll find that it is a fairly complex system. Is it all worth it? I can't see the rational behind it but who am I to question the EPA.

I had a Dakota pickup built during that same era that would kick that alarm/code frequently.

It was usually a split/cracked rubber hose under the car. There are a bunch of them running the length of the car to and from the gas tank, charcoal canister, purge solenoid, etc.

They could be a pain to locate--I didn't have a smoke machine.

Seemed to me there was an issue with the hoses they were using at that time--very poor quality and always cracking.

The lines running under the car usually are not rubber, they are usually a hard plastic, the only rubber is connections between the hoses and any right angles .

Check the fuel fill pipe, if it is exposed enough to road mist/debris while in motion the tube will probably be corroded pretty bad, even if you live outside the rust belt ... case in point my new to me 1998 Ram 2500 that I got out of Arkansas , there all it's life and only 172k miles , the filler pipe is corroded as bad as my 2000 Ram 2500 that's spent all it's life in New England.

My '08 Magnum RT did the same thing and also threw a P0456 - EVAP SYSTEM SMALL LEAK code, turned out to be a faulty ESIM (Evaporative System Integrity Monitor) located under the right rear wheel well cover. Need a smoke machine to find the leak.

Even though no codes are appearing, chances are, a code will set in the future. Two years ago I had an evap code that drove me nuts. I constructed a smoke machine and found no leaks coming from any lines or components of the evap system.
Changed the gas cap for a new one. Still getting the code. I started putting the gas cap really tight. That's when the evap codes went away and never came back. The top part of the fuel filler neck that contacts the rubber gasket of the gas cap had
no rust or corrosion. I figured that the top of the filler neck had fine scratches and allowing the cap not to seal. So, whenever I fuel up I make sure I muscle the gas cap on good. This is on a 97 Buick Regal.
You could have that same issue. Try tightning the gas cap real tight and see what happens.

The metal sealing ring for the fuel pump and seal into and on top of my wife's 2001 Town and Country fuel tank rusted and whenever we would fill the tank completely there would be a drip of gas on the ground. You could smell the gas strongly if you filled it but otherwise nothing extreme. We replaced the gas cap and still it threw the EVAP leaking gas cap code, until we found the leak at the fuel pump and tank sealing ring. Next time you fill the tank completely check the fuel tank and see if there's a leak at the fuel pump or even if you can smell gasoline.

How many years/miles does the EPA require the emissions related equipment warranty to be?

My fuzzy memory is that it was 100,000 miles but got bumped higher?

Vehicles with California emissions equipment have an additional separate warranty mandated by the state of California of 7 years / 70,000 miles from when the vehicle is first put into service, whichever comes first and regardless of ownership. This warranty covers many more parts than the federal warranty. There are also some vehicles that have emission parts covered well beyond the 8 years / 80,000 miles afforded by the Federal Emissions Warranty.

Performance Warranty

The Performance Warranty covers repairs which are required during the first 2 years
or 24,000 miles of vehicle use (whichever first occurs) because the vehicle failed an
emission test. Specified major emission control components are covered for the first
8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever first occurs). If you are a resident of an area with
an Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) program that meets federal guidelines, you are
eligible for this warranty protection provided that:

There are three specified major emission control components, covered for the first 8 years or
80,000 miles of vehicle use (whichever first occurs) on 1995 and newer vehicles:
• Catalytic converters
• The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU)
• The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD)

On my 2015 Challenger the light comes on every few months, I bought a SnapOn diagnostic box to turn the light off. 22,000 miles, I wonder if it’s still under the emission warranty? I changed the oil the first time and got 50 miles from house dash lit up with warning and shut the car down (no gas pedal) coasted to roadside sat for minute then was ok after that. Dealer said oil cap wasn’t tight, go figure
