Power steering pump shaft end play ?

How much in and out slop is acceptable on a power steering pump shaft ?

I just bought a remanufactured Saginaw style pump, and when I went to install the pulley I noticed what seems to me to be excessive in and out movement on the shaft. about 0.060" or 1/16", possibly more.

So, how much movement is too much ?

agree, this is normal. the saginaw pump on my charger is the original unit, and has almost 19k original miles on it.
no leaks or noises, works as it should.

I guess I'll try it, but it sure seems like a lot of movement.

I built a lot of pumps while working at the dealer. They always have a ton of end play.

I don't think that I've ever seen a working PS pump that didn't have 1/8"+ of end play. Totally normal and probably necessary for some reason.

When I rebuilt my leaking Saginaw years ago I worried about the same thing. I put it in and it ran perfectly for years.

Don't call it "slop"--call it a "self-aligning pulley" if it makes you feel better...
