Question about 1971 Satellite/Roadrunner hood - 04/04/22 12:02 AM

Hi all,

The PO included an extra hood when I bought my 1971 Satellite (as in 1st pic, below). Was this hood available on Satellite, Roadrunner and GTX? And is it the hood I would use if I wanted to install an air grabber kit (2nd pic)? Thanks for any info.

Roger

Yes , the base 71 satellite hood was used to make the 71 air grabber hood.

To answer your original question, the Air Grabber was not available on Sattelites - only on RR or GTX models.

I do not believe the 360 was available until late 73 or 74 which would have been after the air grabber had stopped being used.

It could be that he had a 71 Air Grabber and someone replaced the 340 with a 360. Or maybe as time progressed the size of the engine got confused.

air grabber kit

Where are you getting this "kit"? The under side of the stock hood is different than the air grabber. The air grabber has a different inner frame structure for the air cleaner. I have both these hoods, The air grabber water got into and rusted out the lower/inner frame structure. My plan is to cut the opening/holes in the outer hood and cut the inner section of the air grabber(around the air cleaner) and weld it to the good(rust free) hood. I suppose you could cut up the stock hood but it wouldn't look factory unless you had the lower frame section around the air cleaner.

Ok, just to clarify, I'm not planning to add an Air Grabber kit to my hood.

an AIRGRABBER hood isn't just a flat Satellite hood with the insert added

the top sheetmetal is the "flat" hood & the inner sheetmetal is from a "bulge" hood

Thanks for clarifying. I guess I made a bad assumption when I saw the air grabber and bulge kits that are offered for sale.

The "bulge" is actually made from fiberglass.

And this kit does NOT come with the "bulge". Have seen mixed reviews on the reproductions.
