Vaccuum advance cannisters

Is there much difference in the amount of advance, the curve, provided by different cannisters ?

I have never come across a chart with different vaccuum can part numbers, or how much advance they give.

I'm interested in BB distributors, typical 60's / 70's stuff, or if there are any specialty aftermarket cans.

IIRC the FSM's have the advance numbers for the vacuum advance.

The standard motors E catalog generally lists the amount of advance on their stuff.

Dual Point or Normal. Prestolite have arm # stamp and curve data in their book. Adjustable via shim washers and or spring. Newer mopar types have adjustable screw to help with curve. As stated the FSM also some info on this. G

the adjustment is a 3/32" allen wrench inserted into the hose nipple.
i' can't remember [really ? what a surprise ! ] which way turned increases or decreases the amount of vacuum needed to start the arm actuation.
that could be confirmed by using a hand held vacuum pump, and watch what amount of vacuum it takes to start the arm to move.

they do vary. some will have different number of degrees in them and different spring rates.

that is another way to tailor the advance curve.
this is where "try it and see what happens" comes into play.
most of the time, a super tune is not done in one 20 minute period.
just because your buddy runs advance can #xyz, doesn't mean it is the right can for your combination.
it may be CLOSE, but not necessarily right ON.
i think it's member Cab Burge that says : "tune, tune, and tune some more".
lots of things to consider to get the most from your particular combination.

i agree. i can't count how many different distributor curves i've built for my two cars, plus all the hours and miles testing.
