Cleaning Silver Argent paint without damaging it

Cleaning Silver Argent paint without damaging it - 02/07/22 04:18 AM

I was checking out my 69 GTX that is put away for the winter, I lifted up the car cover and noticed one of the taillight bezels had some tan spots on the silver argent paint, I dabbed a little water on in with my finger and it helped a little but stopped as I found myself wanting to try and rub it out which in turn would remove the sandpaper like texture of the argent paint and the temp was only about 26F and the water froze on the argent and I did not want to discolor it.

So when it warms up is there a way to clean and remove the spots without removing the argent paint ? the bezel is nos and I hope I can get it looking good again. I think the tan spots were caused by Boxelder bugs doing whatever they do.

Thanks Moparts

I'd try something gentile like a soft paintbrush and some water or car detailing spray.

Old toothbrush and a mild mix of simple green.

If that doesn’t work. Try stronger concentration of simple green.

make sure the toothbrush is a "soft" one.
they come in soft, medium, and hard.
i have one of each, clearly marked, so i can pick the one i need for the job i intend to do.

Soap and water, let is soak and let the soap do the work, don’t rub it very much or it will leave a spot.

Should throw in camera lens brushes for being a good tool to use for delicate cleaning without scratching.

The original argent on the 1970 Sport Satellite here still looks amazing.

I wet copiously with a hose & dab it gently with a thick soapy sponge, no rubbing at all.

Then a liberal rinse with the hose.
