Mopar Stage VI heads and Roller Rockers - 01/25/22 03:31 PM

Working on a stroker build refresh. Bought a complete motor and it came with Stage VI heads and Crane Gold Rockers. I've always been a fan of Harland Sharps. Looking at the description on the heads they claim to use "factory components". But Harland Sharp lists a set of rockers just for the Stage VI heads. Trying to decide if I should just use the Cranes as the motor ran before, or switch them out for Harland Sharps, and if so does a standard set of Harland Sharps work/reason for Harland Sharp having a set just for the Stage VI's? Motor will be intended to run as a street / strip build as I miss racing, but don't want to go back to trailering a car. Like to drive there, play and drive home.

Probably a question better asked in the Unlawful Race section.

Mock them up and see if they line up properly and have the correct geometry. That is the only way to know. If they fit correctly and work correctly then you are good to go. If they don't then sell them and buy something that works.

I recall the Stage VI's being specced for a .485" intake offset.
That is less than E-Victors aT .650" and less than Indy 440-1 AT .800".

it's been quite a few yrs since i messed with this. I used to put together a 470 bracket engine for some friends using stage 6 heads and a comp cams .690 roller. we used indy rockers at first and they were unreliable with the k1000 springs and ended up using harland sharps. the thing with stage 4,5 and 6 heads is the recommended offset intake rockers. we didn't use offset rockers but had to add push rod clearance at the bottom of the outside of the intake port wall. after doing this there were no more issues. don't do the crane offset intake rocker. i've tried that and the ones i have are very crummy. the fulcrum points are all over the place and they'll eat valve guides quickly.

I prefer Harland Sharp as well.

I ran the Crane on my stage 6 heads years ago without issues. As I recall there might of been an offset on either the intake or exhaust that was unique to the head. Otherwise shafts and hardware was the same. I had studs and billet hold downs. They had shims for side to side alignment that needed to be used when setting up. Sometimes push rod clearance may have to be made depending on lift and push rod size. I also recall some block clearances needing to be made on cylinders 1 and 8. That may vary from block to block. All part of the mock up procedures.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll prolly lean towards getting the Harland Sharps specific to the Stage VI then. Short block is still at the machine shop, but once it's back I can do a double check on things and take a look at how the Cranes are lining up. They have been ran on it before, I'm just not 100% sure on their length of life I guess.

This ^^^

The Crane Golds usually fit the Stage VIs quite well. If the Cranes line up properly on the valve stems, then a standard Harland Sharp will be too long. You would need to buy the Edelbrock-specific Harland Sharps that have a shorter distance between the shaft centerline and roller tip centerline. I don't know what length the Mancini bushed rockers made by HS are, but they might be worth checking out if you simply don't want to use the Cranes.

Max Wedge Stage VI heads require a .485" offset intake rocker, but standard-port Stage VIs use a regular offset rocker for intake & exhaust.

I currently use Hughes Engine rockers and shafts on my Stage VI. No issues what so ever, spin my 496 to 7500. Runs mid 9's.

Crane made a stage 6 specific rocker. This post makes it sound like they are the wrong application. What p/n Cranes are they (stamped on the rocker)?

My old guy faded recollection is that my StageVI heads used standard Crane Gold rockers. I’m betting the “specific” rocker was aimed at the Chapman version of the head.

Part numbers stamped on the rockers are
Crane 64-150
"hexagon symbol" - 11

Heads are P-4532134 (I don't know if cast p/n changed thru the varaition's?)

these are the crane stage 4-5-6 offset intake rockers. i found that an offset rocker wasn't absolutely necessary on a stage 6, but i did do some clearancing at the bottom of the intake outer wall with a .690 lift cam.

64792-1(64793-1 1.6) is the crane number, unfortunately the rocker are not stamped with this. The intaker rockers are physically wider than the exhaust though. In the standard head set the rockers are physically the same width intake/exhaust.

I ran the crane golds when I ran my Stage six heads,
They were fine until you got over 680 lift.
Then eventually one will peel off the shaft.
Anything under that they performed well.

I'm thinking mine are standard. Don't plan to run a cam over 680 as i plan to drive it on the street some yet. So maybe ok to run with them. These are them, not the best angle I know. But motor is all torn down now, so only picture I have.

I would run them and have fun with the car! wave

I would also. The special offset ones must only be required with certain versions of the heads. They are my favorite middle of of the pack rocker. I have never owned Harland's. At those prices I have just gone with T&D.

those are the standard cranes. i'd be careful of spring pressures. watch push rod geometry with those long adjusters.

The Crane catalog shows that along with the stage 4/5/6 heads, the added offset rockers also fit B1/BS and Indy SR’s.

I can tell you that the original std port stage 6 doesn’t need the extra offset, and neither do SR’s.

In fact, the added offset rockers on earlier stage 6’s would probably need more tweaking to the head than if you were using the std rockers.
Part of the typical/normal stage 6-isms........ intake pushrod hole locations could vary quite a bit.

My guess is the HS made Mancini rockers would work fine on std stage 6’s, and that normal HS rockers could end up being longer than optimal.
