Might be easier to start with, what do you want/what are your goals?

Thats the thing. I really dont know. I just want to build a hemi. I have 5 cars yet to restore after this 69 bee is done. There are so many options as far as which blocks to buy, which heads are better suited for the application there in. Between the indy and stage v lineup idk which route i wanna go yet. Fitting under the factory hood on the 68 charger will be mandatory unless i put it in the 68 Coronet RT i would use SIXPACK hood on that one. I only have 68 69 70 B bodys. I just want to see what everyone has. Just has to run on pump gas is the only other mandatory object.

People need to know what you plan to do with the car (street, race, etc) to give you some idea what would be your best way to go.
That's why he said

A race build is completely different from a mild street build.

Someone posting the info on a race build would be useless if it's just going to be a mild street car (resto style build).

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/10/22 12:00 AM

Go to one of the experienced Hemi builders. Blocks have been in short supply the last few years, so many of the latest offerings are new enough that not just everyone has experience with them. But, they will ask you some of the same questions that you are being asked here such as; budget? What amount of maintenance are you comfortable with? How much can your drive train handle? Do you have any traction problems with your current set-up? Etc........................

My 540 made 697 crank at break-in. World iron block, Eddy/MP heads ported by MCH, Landy rockers, Ray Barton reciprocating assembly and cam which is a fts. Indy dual port intake and ThumperDart'ed 1050 Dominator. 91 octane, starts, runs and drives great. Sounds and runs like a Hemi should without being too much of pain in the a$$. Has to have Cal-Tracs and drag radials, otherwise it is just plain dangerous with any throttle at all. And can be a handful even with them.

Here is my 492 cuin Hemi. 10.5:1 CR, custom cam (I'd have to look up the specs when I get home) w/ TTi Headers, 3" exhaust. MP cross ram with twin 650 cfm carbs. I was targeting 600hp. Installed the engine but never took it to a dyno. Hell, I haven't even driven it enough to even get it dialed in yet. Maybe this year.

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/10/22 04:03 AM

Awesome. Keep them coming guys....Mine def will be a street driven car. Ill build the drive line to handle the engine as well as adding torque boxes and good subframe connectors. I did that with my bee and it really stiffened things up. Def don't plan to take any of my cars to the drag strip ever. Ill always run a dot slick off some sort.

Nice build NitrousN,

Going to be doing a similar build myself for my 71 GTX.

4.500 mega block 528ci stroker with MP2 aliminum heads.

I'm impressed with your figures with a 4bbl intake!
What size carb is that?

2200cfm Monster or a KING Cobra 4150 lol...

The Cobra looks much bigger even though its a 4150 carb... fan

Here's my build, probably not what most would want. (higher rpm focused). Chassis dyno on last page.

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/10/22 02:48 PM

Is this why hemi's are so hard to beat?

That little torque and rpm spike, right at the end, maybe timing?

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/10/22 03:16 PM

Haha, thanks! That blip at the end I believe is when it sent the alternator belt into low earth orbit. I was running a stock diameter lower pulley modified for the depth of the crank trigger.

I've since changed it to an underdrive lower so hopefully fixed that problem. (and maybe picked up a few hp)

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/10/22 05:53 PM

'71 charger SE, original 383hp (block cracked beyond repair from ice), auto on column, green and green with additional green. Nothing about car is original. I changed everything.
528 mega cast iron (4.5 X 4.15), MP six pack intake, 833 18 spline trans with McLeod RST dual disk clutch. Indy SR heads, Ron Davis radiator, Dennys drive shaft, Dana 60 with 3.54:1. TTI exhaust system. Street only and car is a real blast to drive. Sounds like space shuttle at launch. Only been "done" about 10 months. Paint is B3 from 1970.

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/10/22 06:59 PM

I built a 572 C.I. pump gas street Hemi motor for a local customer for his 1971 Challenger, he will drive it to local cruise and car shows.
I used a World block bored to 4.500 and a 4.500 stroke crankshaft, 10.8 to 1 compression, dual EFI throttle bodies on a Stage 5 single plane dual throttle body intake manifold FHO rocker arms, solid roller EFI street cam.
Mopar 1970/1971 stock street hemi oil pan and pickup, Holley EFI and ignition.
It made 799 HP at 6500 RPM, and it made 704 Ft. Lbs. from 3500 RPM to 732 peak torque at 5400 RPM with 732 Ft. lbs. with 705 Ft. lbs. at 5900 RPM on 91 octane CA pump swill.
it should be a real hoot to drive on the street boogie devil

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/10/22 07:11 PM

4.500" bore, 4.500" stroke, Circa 2008 Mopar Performance/World block, K1 crank, Molnar Rods, Diamond pistons,
Victor Jr. Heads, Crane .640 Mechanical street roller, I've got a few intake manifolds to try on it later/the one in the pic was just the first in line to try. Balanced by Best Machine in MI, assembled by me. Fired on 4/26/20 just to hear it and check it out, but not installed in the car yet...lots of work to be done to the car. It is set up to be a street/strip engine. The motor plate somewhat takes away from the "street" feeling but the goal is to make the wedge to hemi/or backward transition as simple and budget friendly as possible (there is also a future chance of a big CI Wedge). Conversion mounts weren't available at all last year and I wasn't convinced they would be a good choice for my type of abuse.

Don't have any numbers, I've spent the dyno budget on sheetmetal for the car... will probably just do chassis dyno later.

Many decisions to be made, and I wish you luck.

It might be better to decide what you -don't- want, and you've started that along the lines of
fuel type and what hood to use on what car. Once that list is more complete, a picture can be painted....

I changed my mind more than once and struggled a little bit with a few details....
I found the builds I was interested in most of all, folks would usually not talk about them enough to be
of much help. The few that did talk about their details ended up being super helpful, even if their combinations and goals were
totally different, and by doing that they became influential in the build.

Certain universal truths apply, but there are a few Hemi specific things that can be concerning if you never encountered them before.
Feel free to give me a shout for directional info...if I don't know the answer I may know someone else who can help.

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/11/22 12:06 AM

Which early hemi block did you choose and how big?
I got addicted to them in the early to late 1960s up
Converted to the 426 street Hemi on the first gas crunch in the 1970s boogie
I wish I had the foresight to buy as many of the street Hemi cars on the use car lots that I could have afforded for $300.00 to $1000.00 each back then shruggy I didn't realcrazy whiney

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/12/22 02:01 AM

Do you know which casting the block is, RR, A-1 or the other one?
The reason I ask is I've own all 3 and would use the A1 casting with the stronger main webbing for the blower motor up
Posted By: moparx

Re: Show me your hemi builds - 01/12/22 07:08 PM

according to one book i have, the A-1 casting indicates the block was cast at the foundry at 8 Mile Road & Mound Road.
H H indicates the Highland/Hamtramck foundry [mostly for Dodge vehicles/trucks]
the CWC mark was the Chrysler Windsor Canada foundry.

Correct me if I'm wrong Cab, but isn't this that same engine?

I thought I remembered on one of the old threads Nedbal jumped in and posted this video, but he doesn't seem to come to this board anymore.

Either way the EFI wont be the route i take. Id rather use a carb. One big part of the budget is paying someone to assemble it. I can def assemble my own which should save me some loot.
