800 cfm AVS2 carb on 440

800 cfm AVS2 carb on 440 - 11/05/21 02:17 PM

Hello, I have an 800 cfm manual choke AVS2 carb on a 1967 440 with 915 heads, approx 9.5:1 compression, 484 mopar cam and CH4B dual plane intake. In general, I like this carb but performance has gotten inconsistent. Top end performance is great but it can feel flat at cruise. Off idle is fine (no bog at all, maybe a tad a little sluggish) but cruise smelled rich the last time I drove it. If I put my foot into it, it really wakes up. I haven't played with the air door. I am going to give it a good cleaning and check the floats but I figured I would ask what rods and jets everyone is running. It's close where it's at but I think it can be a lot better. Thanks

My '68 RR is running the AVS2 650 manual choke on its basically stock 383.
Only tuning change I've made is going 2 steps leaner (cruise) on the rods using the Eddy tuning kit.
4-speed & 3.23s if that matters.
Runs way better than its #s carb, which I should take to Scott Smith for investigation of someone's previous rebuild.

Yeah, forgot to mention gears. I have 3:91s and a 727 w/a 3000 stall converter. The kickdown was adjusted a little heavy, and when I backed it off a bit to get a better shift spread I could feel the carb bouncing in and out of the idle circuit. I changed out the step up springs to correct that, which worked but I am thinking my rods are still a little too thin. Sounds like you had to go in the same direction. I'm really digging the new boosters though!

Most after market carbs are to rich for most Mopars, lean it down .002 to .005 on the middle and maybe the top step also, tune it until you love it up scopewrench scope

Stock - Metering Rod .065 X .052

I ended up with a .070 X .052 after trying the recommended .068 X .052

7" Purple Springs

13" vacuum at idle with my Comp XE275 HL Cam

383/432 Stroker

Absolutely love the carb

With your 284-484 Cam what’s your vacuum at idle ? Probably pretty low I would guess

I would never buy and use another Mopar 284 Hydraulic cam after trying one once back in the late 1990, THEY ARE JUNK down
The cam I used in the motor I'm talking about (400 block stroke to 4.300 with a 4.375 bore with 9.25 to 1 compression originally) was a custom Comp Cams solid roller that had 260@.050 on the intake side with .420 lobe lift and it had 266 @.050 on the exhaust side with .409 lobe lift, I bought and used a set of Harland Sharp 1.65 ratio rockers.
That motor was a absolute pleasure to drive and race with, 700+ HP at 5500 RPM using Oregon 91 octane pump swill boogie up

Vac was around 8 or 9 at idle.

a 2019 edelbrock catalog i have gives a different jetting spec than the website states. i'd verify which i have before making changes. the regular 800avs i have experience with. went from out of the box calibration to .107 primaries, .104 secondaries, 68x47 metering rods. also worked the accellerator pump circut. drives and performs quite well now; a little goofy OOTB.

Surprised it’s that high honestly

Anyways so stick with the 5" factory orange springs or drop down to the yellow 4"

Start with the .068 X .052 metering rods , verify your float level and drop and go from there

What’s your plugs look like in idle/cruise circuit
Have you pulled them
