Good/cheap OBD scanner??

Good/cheap OBD scanner?? - 11/02/21 10:28 AM

Looking to get a good OBD scanner, but don't want to break the bank. I have seen some that are Bluetooth, but only work with android. I have an iPhone. It would be used for our 2008 Avenger and 2014 Durango in case a check engine light comes on. Avenger I can do the key trick to get the code, but sometimes it doesn't give one. The Durango doesn't have a key, so the key trick doesn't work. Was hoping a scanner would pull the codes. I don't want it to automatically clear the code in case the dealer needs to know what it was to fix it.

Basically any cheap scanner/reader will do what you are looking for. Read and erase codes.

This one says it works with iPhone.

As I have already posted here,
I saw eight Konnwei KW681 OBD-II scanners in a Goodwill Store priced at $7.99 each.
These were still in shrink wrapped boxes.
The box said they were also 12 volt lead acid battery testers.

I decided to risk buying one.
I had never heard of Konnwei.

The battery testing involved many different USA, Euro, DIN, Japanese, and China test procedures.
They all seem to be able to rate new good batteries, from older still good batteries, to a bad battery with one shorted cell with sulphation.

The OBD-II could detect DTC, erase DTCs,
and show “pending” Mode$07 DTCs yet to turn on the dash trouble light.

Sensor outputs could all be displayed and auto-updated every few seconds.

There is an oxygen sensor pass/fail test.
There is an alternator ripple voltage test.

It showed me a general P0700 transmission code, and a P0755 sub code..

It tells me there are two PCMs, and I am guessing the second PCM is the transmission computer.

I tried, but could not find out how to read CVI, or “Clutch Volume Index”.
It may be possible, but the instruction book is not well written.
The Chinese section of the book seems much longer,
and when my fluent Chinese speaking niece next visits I am going to ask her if there is more info.

There is a micro USB port for updates.

Well worth $8,
and I wish I had bought a couple more.

Konnwei makes more than a dozen different models,
says the advertising flyer with pictures in the box.

I've used this Innova OBD Code Reader 1000

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/innova/tools---equipment/diagnostic-tools/code-readers-scanners/5609f7011617/innova-obd-code-reader/inn0/1000/v/a/129830/automotive-truck-2015-gmc-canyon?q=code+readers%2Fscanners&pos=5

Helped me out and saved me a bunch of cash.

Doesn't specifically say if it works with Apple, but does say "any smartphone".

We have been using the Autel scanners the last few years. They have a large selection of scanners from basic ones to all inclusive ones. They are available from Amazon and on Ebay. Close-out models come along pretty often, too. Good bang for the buck.

I have been looking on Amazon. May see if the wife will get me one for Christmas. I would just buy it, but then she will get me something I may not need at Christmas time. I should ad the dealer is 5 minutes away and reads the codes for me for free. Not a diagnostic, but the code reader itself. I was wanting one for days when the light comes on after the dealer is open or on the weekends. Both have lifetime warranties, so don't want to get too deep into it because they will be fixing it anyway. More of an idea of what it might need.

AutoZone and O'Reilly's (and others) will pull your codes for free. Seven days a week. They won't clear the codes, but they will let you push the button to do it.

i have been super happy with my blue driver scanner. its iphone/android based and connects via bluetooth. it does a ton of stuff including live data. i am totally impressed with how well it works especially for the price. its on amazon for $119. when you scan a error code it even has the most common fixes associated with that code

i have two of them and going to buy a few more just to leave in the glove box of my vehicles)

same here. from what little i do, the maxlink version works reasonably well, and is lifetime [whose ? biggrin] updateable.
