Help with 66 monaco teardown - 11/01/21 09:49 PM

Pulling engine and trans in one shot. The trans crossmember appears to have the torsion bars seated or going through it. Is it possible to remove trans without relieving torsion bars and removing the crossmember. I havent seen this before i only know 68 up. Thanks for any help.

Been too many cars and too many years to be sure, but I don't ever remember doing anything with torsion bars when pulling a trans. Trust, I've pulled a lot of transmissions. Pictures may help jog the old memory though.. Gene

Is there not a removable piece in the center of the trans crossmember held in with four bolts? Looks like this.

On the cars I have worked on with a fixed rear cross member you can unbolt the rear mount and slide the transmission out of the crossmember by lifting the engine up to clear the oil pan, then move it out the front of the car.

I am used to seeing removable center cross members on mopars. Weird. shruggy

Some of the early C bodies had 6 bolts holding the trans crossmember in, two bolts are up inside of the channel.

I do also remember lifting the motor sliding a few forward to clear the trans crossmember like mentioned earlier, but I thought those were the mid 70s version with a separate torsion bar crossmember and trans crossmembers. The trans cross members were removable, but you still had to slide the trans forward to clear the torsion bar crossmember.
