70 E-body console with 518 trans and stock type shifter? - 08/14/21 02:14 AM

Any vendor make a kit or stock style shifter to use in a factory 70 E-body auto console setup with a 4speed auto like the 518 Trans?

I used the same factory shifter when I converted from 727 to 518.

You just need a way to turn the OD on and off. Shifter is the same otherwise. Might have to mod the floor, however.

Bigdaddy,

I've done the A-518 swap in my Cuda and kept the stock Slap-Stick shifter. Let me point one thing out: the lower pivot for the shifter linkage won't bolt to the tailshaft of the A-518 (like it does on the A-727). So you'll need to fabricate a pivot and find a good place to mount it. You'll see that in one of the links. Just thought I'd mention that up front and save you some reading.

Good luck

has anyone swapped to a 518, then modified the valve body with a trans -go TFOD-3 kit, which is supposed to make the 518 a manual valve body ?
if so, how did it work out ? how did it work if you used a slapstick shifter ?
TIA as always ! bow

I did, the transgo manual shift & set it up to still use the throttle pressure cable, so light throttle it shifts soft, WOT it has full pressure & shifts very firm & I converted my stock shifter to cable & cut & ground slots on the shifter plate so it works like a gated shifter, they do make plates already modified,, 68 Charger, also have 2 switches one for lock up & OD

Is that a full manual + regular pattern?

Bigdaddy,

Attached are a few pics from my swap when I was mocking things up and had to fabricate the lower part (pivot) for the linkage.

First pic: Notice how the vertical rod from the shifter is angled to clear the A-518 tailshaft. That's unavoidable because the A-518 tailshaft is so much larger than the A-727.

Second pic: my solution (your's might be different). I used the OEM bracket but modified how it was bolted to the transmission. In my case, I made a new bracket which bolted to some longer transmission pan bolts. The bolts are 5/16 diameter and there are 2 of them, so it's secured well.

Hope this helps

Yes & Yes, converting my stock shifter to a cable was not all that difficult & it works awesome

I started to. But wanted a couple of other changes that the shift kit did not address. So, I had A&A custom build a forward manual valve body. I also had them take some hit out of the 1-2 shift and some pressure out of reverse so that it didn't bang going in with my higher idle RPM. It was more money, of course. But I am very happy with the results.

And I think that the Slap Stick shifter is the best shifter I have ever used. Works great even with the manual valve body.

Charlie, i thought you had a trans-go shift kit, but i thought it was the TF-2od one. you probably told me at one time you used a TF-3od, but everyone here knows my cobwebs "hide" lots of stuff i "know". biggrin
Dave, i have a junk slapstick here i have been soaking with all kinds of stuff in an attempt to loosen it up from it's rusted solid state. my reason for dinking around with this shifter instead of obtaining a good or better one, is because i want to see if i can fab up the parts necessary to convert my factory shifter in my charger to a slapstick setup. i have a gate plate, maybe a duncan piece, i'm not sure, but i like the way a slapstick works better. i'm keeping my charger a 727 for the [long] foreseeable future.
as for the 518, and the TF-3od kit, my plan for this is for my 33 humpback panel [eternal] project. i want to hook this transmission to a pushbutton shifter. i figure if imperial services can figure this out, so can i. i have several good pushbutton assemblies on the shelf, plus a few junkers i can "practice" on to get the movement right to work with the 518. i also have a bunch of shift leavers for the transmission, plus a bunch of "leftover" levers that i have picked up over the years when my buddies would buy shifters for their ferds and chubbys, and then toss the leftover parts my way.
that's my plan[s], so anything tossed my way i will appreciate ! up
