Need a rear end ...

Need a complete new rear end.

2" Mini-tubbed '69 RR.

Want:
- Dana
- 3:54 gears
- disc brakes
- would like to install ABS so need the sensor ring in the rear end

What's a good street diff - posi, Detroit Locker, Detroit TruTrac or Trac-Loc
What's a good rear disc setup - want something that you can easily find parts for. Strange offers "Explorer" rear setup. Others offer "economy" etc.

Looked at Dr. Diff, Strange, Moser and DTS

Dr Diff is out west so shipping would be expensive. DTS is within driving distance (when the borders open). Strange doesn't have an online shopping/price list.

Also, as far as rear end fitment/width, what's a respectable amount of clearance between the tire and inner tub (Caltrac mono-leafs).

I'm considering just ordering a stock width rear end and use a wheel with 2" more backspacing

Has ABS on a non floating axle Dana 60 been done? Are there parts or kits available to do this or are you going to design and fabricate your own? Are there parts for the front? What about computer, master cylinder? Can it work with way different size tires front to back? (Minitubbed and wide wheels and tires) Unless there is a well engineered complete kit for this you better really really know what you are doing.

I've had both a spool and a Detroit in street vehicles, and I wouldn't recommend either on the street. The spool was ridiculous. The Detroit was never a big problem, but was more than a little annoying when it would engage while turning. Very harsh.

A Tru-Trac or Wavelock diff is probably your best option.

One thing I like about a spool is predictability, you always know exactly how it will act because it can only do one thing and that is keep the tires locked together. A locker is a spool, or its not, and the times it decides to come in and out of the locked status don't always make sense.

In the rain I am fully aware of how my Barracuda acts with a spool, its really no big deal because I know exactly what it will do which is usually nothing out of the ordinary. My Jeep has a locker and it's not always predictable, when it locks and unlocks usually is but how the vehicle responds is not.

I agree with all of that. I hated the spool, but I knew what to expect. The locker would bite me on occasion, even if I was aware of what might happen. My Jeep had a 7 inch lift, 35s, etc, so when that locker would lock during a turn, it would hit hard.

ABS in a 69??? More info on motor trans/details would help. You can get 9 1/4's with both ABS ring and disk brakes out of later model dodge pick ups.

Not sure on that, they did a 248 rbi axle that everyone calls a dana 60 with a trac-loc and the exciter ring, not sure on axle splines, or if it is a weird dana version or 9-1/4 as the service manual shows 3.55 gears, not the traditional 3
54. They also did a dana 70 with the powerlock and the ring that could be gear swapped to 35 spline axles. A guy would need to know if the ring and sensor are compatible before spending any money.

Rick Ehrenberg had an article in Mopar Action about retrofitting rear ABS using components from the old B series vans.

Yup, that's the plan.

Also thinking of using the Mopar 9-1/4 rear end as well a the Jeep rear disc swap (if they'll work on the 9-1/4). I like the idea of keeping it all "Mopar" and off-the-shelf parts.

Have you got a price from DTS? I looked on their site and they want $5000 for a D 60...

I got my dana from dr diff a few months back and the shipping was included in the price which by the way was a good deal.

i'm pretty sure the 9 1/4" rear has the same axle stand off measurement and bolt pattern as the 8 3/4, so the brake swap should work out.

I would have to find my receipts to be exact, but I think I've got $2700 into my D60. Bought the axle off of Craigslist for $100 and reused the ring gear as it was in good shape and the ratio I wanted. Bought everything else from Doctor Diff and had Warren Gear and Axle assemble it all. Included an Explorer rear disc setup.

I spec'd mine out with Dr Diff and it comes to $2,690.00,

Unfortunately I didn't order it last week and they're closed until Aug 9th for vacation now, Looks like the Dream Cruise and probably Hines Drive is out, again...

I sold the S60 out of my Duster last month for $1900 complete with disc brakes. It had 4.10 gears and a Detroit Locker.

Apparently the Explorer brakes don't fit in Weld ProStars as well as a few other popular wheels !!

Yeah I saw that at the time but I think it was too narrow. There was some reason I wasn't all over it not the least being shipping and the border closure.

Why don't you yank the axle out then and have Warren Gear go through what you have?

I would take to Kevin at Bears in Old Castle. Our side of the border. He made me a S60 for a 69 Bee a few years ago. This gives you the option to have the Best street differential ever offered in a car. Power Lock. Easy on clutches and not too tight on turns because the clutches are relaxed when not under a torque load. When the spider gears see torque, the center pin rides up ramps and compresses the crap out of the clutches, making the diff act like a spool. Locks it hard.

As for inside clearance. Depends on how you drive. The only clearance required is during articulation. The tire will travel in an arc towards the center of the car.

Stock rear ends are great for wheel clearance when using data from other cars with the same set up but if you make it a bit narrow. You can run a deeper offset rim which looks better and is a bit lighter.
