going manual A833 or TKO

Want to get opinions and points of view, pros and cons for comparison. Lets say the car is generic street driving and occasional test and tunes or exhibition type race. (Not, all outs or brackets or money)

healthy 440 with 30" tires gears are 3.55 car weighs 3000

Either will be equipped with a hydraulic clutch.

Each kit purchased from dealer with new or rebuilt parts as a kit,

The TKO 5-speed and all parts is about $6000

The 833 4-speed and all parts is about $5000


nostalgia or originality don't matter, looks don't matter, whats the best transmission for drive-ability, longevity, fun factor?

go with the tkx. no floor mods supposedly, and way better shifting and power handling ability than the tko. you definitely want the overdrive in the modern world. but it depends what you want to do with the car.

I sure like my 5 speed OD trans. I can have better rear gears (in my case 3:55), and still drive down the highway without concerns of the RPMs the motor is turning at pretty much any speed below 100 mph.

I'd go TKO for the overdrive an internal rail shift linkage but IF quality shifting interests you are all. T56 Magnum.

No gear ratio formula or price per gear can help you with this decision. If you like shifting fast, this is the BEST manual transmission ever made.

I plan on getting a TKX hopefully in the next winter or two.



The TKX should be better in every respect except price and loss of "originality." Overdrive will let you use 4.10 or 4.56 gears and still cruise in the fast lane @ a reasonable RPM. As it is now, with 3.54 gears and 28" tires, my engine runs faster than I care for @ cruise while the car cruises slower than I care for

6 speed out of a newer Challenger. They're less than half the cost of what you have listed.

the KITs i was referring to in either scenario were complete from bellhousing to driveshaft shifter to clutch reservoir, almost, if not everything needed to swap. Not just a transmission out of a wreck. With the few responses which are appreciated, It just seems there are not many here with the practical experience to offer a true comparison.

I have had both in an e-body. If the choice is between tko and 833 I pick 833. Drive-ability goes to the tko more gears and OD.
Too me the 833 is more fun to drive.
If it were me I would get a tkx or t56 magnum since you don't seem to mind cutting a little. A tko is not worth $6k and cutting a car a t56 is.

I bought a TKO600 from Liberty's with all of their performance upgrades for $3k and picked up a bell housing from Modern Driveline for roughly $400. I used an OEM clutch arm and built a bracket for a Willwood pull-type slave cylinder. In other words, I put together my own package and I just don't see it adding up even close to $6k. $4k with a new driveline is about what I have in mine.

Driveability is great. There are 2 final drive ratios available so you can pick what you want.

Learn how to weld and fabricate. Anything can be done. Geezuz man, I could build a shifter and crossmember in my sleep. You got 3 grand to play with from my suggestion, figure the rest out with a Fab Shop.

Nevermind, throw five thousand bucks at something, and then come back crying on here that you've got vibrations in the driveline, or something doesn't fit right. I don't care, it's not like the subject hasn't been beat to death and well documented on here already.

Not sure where a viper six speed fits into the mix price wise but after a bit of hunting I scored a 13k mile viper trans for under a grand (800), the new viper crate motor already had the oem clutch, but point being I was under 2k.

I just cant see a 833 "kit" being 5k, that far exceeds my gf101 including the clutch.

Id think unless you have to have it on the road this summer id spend the winter hunting and spend 1/2 the money...... but some have it to burn.

You have your panties in a wad pal. I was asking for a comparison of the two in the sense of function for cost. not just a different way to buy a gearbox.

(new TKO $2,795 gearbox only, Rebuilt a833 $1750 gearbox only)

I appreciate your input as well as others but you didn't offer any comparison. I don't expect you think that yours is the only solution or opinion on the matter,

but wait your post does sound like you have the only solution even without regard to what my question was.

Well, you're still talking 2 to $3000 for a bell housing, shifter, transmission mount and driveshaft.

That's excessive.

I've driven the 6 speed in an SRT 10 Ram and 6 speed in a Challenger SRT. They are better than my 833's. Originality is the only reason I stay with the 833's.

The TKX is going to give you the great 5th highway gear and the Tremec will shifter more smoothly.

Potato has a another option just say no to synchros and get a G-force 4 or 5sp. Fun factor is very high.
