H CODE WHEELS

I have a set of steel rims off my 69 Hemi RR. I purchased the RR back in the early 90's. need help figuring what these are 2 have the big H, has 15x6 JJ made in Cana.a stamped on inside, 1 has small H with the 15x6 JJ and made in Canada stamped on the inside, the other has no H but 15x6 JJ made in USA stamped on inside and has numbers by the valve stem, 3641331, all wheels have the 3 nubs to mount the hub cap. I think the 2 rims with the big H are 69 Rims? the small H is 70? rim, the other no idea, looking for help and info. thanks and be safe

Big H wheels started with date codes in 1968 & through 1972. I've had & sold a bunch of them.

Wheels with H's or H wheels? If your talking about H wheels as the Heavy Duty Hemi and Six pack wheels, to be clear the 68 date code wheels should have been late dates for the early 69 cars. 3 nubs, point valve stem and the 69 year later center style. 68 Hemi wheels were 15x6 JK and they had the early style center with humps between holes.

Some of these wheels where used on C bodies also. I think there were even some extra heavy duty wheels (station wagons) as an option on some cars.

Well tell me - what is an "H" wheel? Here's two I've had & still have on my website. Can you tell the difference? ("H" = Heavy Duty, & they came on more cars than just the M-code cars of 69-1/2).

i am no expert on H wheels, however, where is the center hole measuring 2.750 ?
in all my years of playing with mopars, the hub register has always been 2.800-2.810, with the wheel center id being 2.812 - 2.820.
was that printing a misprint or ???? if indeed the center is 2.750, i don't believe that wheel will fit.
being in the junkyard business in the early 70's, it became quickly obvious that ford wheels had a smaller center register than mopar wheels, even though the bolt pattern was the same.
if i'm not mistaken, the ford register was 2.740 - 2.750 on the hub, and the wheels were 2.755 - 2.765. [or close to those dimensions]

Never once had a problem with the center hole being too small unless someone was putting a wheel on a Jeep or a van. And yes - I measured the center holes & they were 2.75" - Fords were the same.

I know for a fact that earlier ford's ( 60's) had a smaller hub register as i bought a set of Chrome wheels on close out back in 1972 or so at J C Penneys. The hub hole was too small for my 64 Polara. So i had a local machine shop hog them out. Shortly thereafter I found that the lip they had to remove was critical to the strength of the wheel center as they began splitting between the lug holes and center

I have also seen wheels that are not 15x6 JJ with H stamps, and other with different H stamp, and others with multi letter stamps. My only point is the 69 wheels were a little unique it seems from the later Heavy Duty option wheels.

Still true, my 06 Mustang rims will not fit my Challenger.
A few minutes with a grinder fixed that.

It always amazes me ( P's me off) when some fricken' engineer somewhere creates a new spec on something this simple that wreaks havoc down the road. This just one example of many I've encountered over my life. Another example. 65-68 vs 69 and later Chevrolet sport steering wheels. The 6 hole mounting pattern is .050" smaller. .050" WHY??? no apparent reason can think of.
I worked with a guy that had previously worked at FMC in there military division. he liked to spec thread sizes the were non standard to the rest of the world like a 3x48 SHCS drove me fricken nuts and I fought him every step of the way

Correct - that's the difference. Most people are unaware of that, & the dimples are a very subtle feature. Also, a lot of the H wheels had VERY weak H stampings to where you could hardly see them. Also, none of the H-wheels (the big H wheels anyway) have the part# stamped in them that I've ever seen.

Couple things on "H" wheels. The very early July 68 dated wheels did not have the dimples in the three nubs. Not sure exactly when they started. Also the 1970 and 1971 wheels did have part numbers stamped right at the valve stem hole on the inside of the rim. All those wheels were "870" stamped on the outside of the wheel along with the 15x6 JJ and date. One more thing, the "H" stamp was always in the 9 O'clock position with the valve stem in the 12 O'clock position.
