Advice needed: Adhesive for Thermoquad weeping - 05/05/21 06:43 PM

My 800 cfm TQ has been running crappy for a few years and late last year I noticed it had developed the (common) weep at the rear corner gasket between the horn and bowl. Pretty minor, but just not acceptable. I quit driving the car because of that and the way it was running... DemonSizzler (anyone know where he went?) last went through this carb for me way back in '03.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I took it to local carb guy to rebuild and set it up for me. Now, the ole 'cuda runs better than it has in years, but that annoying leak is still there, only less so. He told me the bowl was warped at that corner (too much to sand the whole top to level it) and that pressure testing it confirmed that it still weeped. He also refused to take a cent from me, since he couldn't warranty it. Helluva nice guy!

He said he had seen TQs come in back in the day with adhesive at the corners, and said there was a gas/oil resistant adhesive that doesn't set up hard like some epoxies that would "weld" the horn to the bowl. I've found some of these products, one of which is Permatex Permashield Gasket Dressing & Sealant. Has anyone used this or similar product to repair a weeping TQ like mine?

Maybe build up the low spot with epoxy and then sand it flat.

JB weld makes an epoxy that works with gasoline. You should be able to find it at any NAPA or AutoZone

i have a super thick piece of flat glass, 12"x12"x3/4" thick.
i take a piece of wet-dry 220 paper, glued to the glass, and using a figure 8 pattern, a light couple of those on the top of the bowel with light pressure usually trues them up.
beer
