Three prong flasher

Three prong flasher - 04/22/21 11:52 AM

Something I never really gave much thought because I’ve never had to replace it, but, is the three prong turn signal flasher on my ‘Cuda some sort of unicorn? 😂

I can’t seem to find anything that matches up, just the universal style. If I have to, I’ll make some jumper wires to connect a standard flasher to the original harness, but would rather not.

I switched over to LED bulbs and the LED flasher I received is a two prong. It worked for my hazard flasher but I need one to work for my three prong turn signal flasher 🙃

looks like a time delay relay 2889565 https://www.ebay.com/p/1722241373

Agree with mopars4ever. The time delay relay turns the ignition key light on/off. It is not the turn signal flasher relay.

Ok thanks, I’ll continue to dig to figure out why turn signals won’t cycle, but the hazards do.

Originally flashers are activated by bulb loads. they are allways energized, but untill bulbs are not sucking load the flasher won't be activated. I guess getting the led conversion, you got the electronic flasher for it, but STILL the signal should be there for them just like originals did

Of course hazzards are feeded from BATT source, while turning needs to get the ign key in ACC or RUN.

Assuming by your screen name you are working on a 72, you can check the red wire arriving to turning switch plug down the column. Put your ign swith on ACC and check for power on turning switch plug. It must be energized. If not, you have a damaged flasher or even unexistant one.

If you have power and still don't get turnings working, it could be the switch damaged... or bulbs

P.S.: the 3 ways flasher there as mentioned is for the ign switch courtesy light on column just at a side of the hazzard knob. It will turn on that light for around 8-15 seconds after get the dome light on and off ( doors opened or dimmer dome light on )

Jumping the red wire to the white wire into the column switch will make blink both rears with turning switch in rest position. That will discard the flasher of course, but not the turning switch completelly. On rest position turning switch gets rear lights linked to the white wire which is the normally closed position for the brake lights coming from pedal switch

then as mentioned on article, feeding each corner ( both greens, tan and brown ) and get the lights work but not through the switch which will confirm switch is bad.

There are two flashers on some of my old mopars, one for hazards and one for turn signal.

One above the brake pedal and one on the side of the ashtray in the center of the dash.

Can't remember which cars specifically. It's been awhile since I had to replace one, so I don't remember which is which.

Did you replace both?

Not uncommon for one to be round and other to be square.

the brake pedal one uses to be hazzard and USED to be the heavy duty squared version. It can be replaced by any round piece as far is heavy duty ( for 6 bulbs ). Tipically labeled with a green band

the one around ashtray it uses to be the turning signal, regular round flasher

Yep, two flasher units. The easy one to find is always the hazard flasher and it seldom gives you any problems. For some reason, Chrysler thought it would be fun to hide the turn flasher that goes bad. Generally the turn flasher is connected to a connecter that is separate from everything else. Often they are found hanging under the dash by the wires, near the radio & ash tray.

It wasn't until the mid 80s Chrysler decided to put the turn signal flasher on the fuse box along with the hazard flasher unit. Gene

Update:

Thanks everyone! The turn signal flasher was hidden between the ash try and glove box. No idea why Chrysler decided to do that as it was said above.

I have now replaced the hazard and turn signal flashers with LED compatible ones (had to use the polarity reversing adapter) and everything works!!

This will get me by until I can install my American Autowire update harness

Thanks again!

yeap, the turning signal flasher uses to be hold by this bracket

which is attached to the ashtray housing like this ( note the right bottom corner)

Interesting! I don't believe I ever saw a turn flasher that wasn't just hanging from the wires! I couldn't imaging Mopar doing that, but after seeing the attaching bracket was for the square flasher, it makes sense, most of the flashers I've ever replaced were round units. My guess was the square flashers didn't last long, I started working on this stuff in the early 70s, and don't remember changing many square old flasher units. Gene

Re: Three prong flasher - 04/25/21 07:53 AM

The bracket is made to accept both, squared and round, hence the bent ends on center. As mentioned, squared used to be hazzards heavy duty one, and turnings allways round, but there is also round heavy duty labeled with a green band. So just one kind of bracket accepting both was made for easy.

If you want to get the bracket, don't search it for Mopar, but for Fords ( 60s Mustangs )... they are virtually the same except the price LOL

If ppl never inserted them back into the bracked it was because they were lazy to do it. Then if trying to remove the ashtray housing removed the bracket and never clipped it back

Hazzard gets the same bracket attached somewhere around brakes pedal brackets assembly.
