Power steering pump shaft play

I have a clacking noise coming from the Federal power steering pump when the car is running. I have pulled the pump and found that there is about a 1/4 inch of play on the shaft when I pull the pulley away from the pump body. Is this normal or should there be less play. Thanks.

I just rebuilt my federal pump last week to correct a leak. It has the same amount of play in and out but doesn't make noise when running. I checked a different pump and it had the same movement. I'd say it's normal
