Daytona Front Wheel Well Moldings

Daytona Front Wheel Well Moldings - 04/05/21 07:36 PM

I bought new front wheel well moldings for a 69 Charger for my Daytona restoration, there are no "Daytona" front moldings that I can find. They fit at the back of the front wheel well fine but not the front due to the alteration for the nose bottom tray/panel. Can't bend them more straight to fit or it ruins them. Not sure what to do...

Has anyone else ran into this probem?

Side note... I was watching the video from Graveyard of them driving the red Daytona they restored, I could see it had rear wheel well moldings but none on the front, I figured they ran into the same problem.

Thanks, Wolf

Not sure this helps - But I thought the 69 Daytona used fenders from the 70 model-year Charger

Maybe those would fit?

Superbirds used Coronet fenders & hood, Daytonas didn't.

They used the 70 hood, but fenders seem the same.

I got it resolved, back in January the body shop destroyed front drivers side molding trying to get it to shape right in that front wheel well area, claimed the moldings need to have someone make alterations.

Today I looked over the other passenger good one they didn't touch, did a test fit and made a small relief cut on the inside surface where the screws go, then I gently straightened it and it fits and looks fine. I doubt anyone would notice.

They did an excellent job painting the car, not sure why this was a big challenge.

Anyway, thanks for the replies!

They modified the 1970 ones, stretched them at the front

A real true Daytona front wheel opening IS NOT a modified 68, 69 or 70 wheel opening opening molding. Yes the 68 thru 70 molding can be snipped and bent or stretched to fold out to conform to the Daytona profile as shown is CSK's link. The true Daytona molding however is longer than a 68 thru 70 molding by about 1/2 to 3/4 inch and is cut off square unlike the regular molding which has a little extended divot. It actually hangs below the Daytona lower valance by maybe 1/2 inch when installed. Follow down in CSK's links post for Hemi Geno's post at bottom of the page. He explains it also and has photo of the extra length. Real Daytona wheel opening moldings are I would say VERY hard to find in this day and age. Its very easy to spot a car with the correct ones. They will over hang the lower valance and are cut off square. 68 thru 70's can be cut square to replicate the Daytona version but they will then be too short.

Agreed, however the straight cut and overshooting length beyond the valance make for a poorly finished look IMHO, although "correct" for an OEM appearance.....
