Factory sunroof ´68 Barracuda?

Factory sunroof ´68 Barracuda? - 04/05/21 06:38 PM

A friend of mine has this ´68 Barracuda Formula S. As can been seen in the photo, the car has a sunroof. Question: Were there factory sunroofs available for ´68 Plymouths? Or could this be dealer installed?

This car is one of the Mopars transported to Europe for final assembly at the Chrysler factory in Rotterdam in Holland; see here: https://www.allpar.com/threads/chry...m-assembly-plant-nekaf-1958-1970.229411/

As far I know, sunroofs were a new add along the 69 production, not even initially. But dunno if on Barracudas or any other A body. Vinyl top was required.

It seems also just on Chargers, which was the only model couldn't be convertible, so the sunroof option was just on them to make somekind of "convertible" option

A 1970 Barracuda was also reported on your side of the pond with a sunroof, it was not a factory option on them either.

Possibly done in the country that imported the bodies to finish their way at final assembly.

The short answer is no, that is not a "factory" sunroof... wave

I've seen a '70 (I believe) E-body (Barracuda, maybe) with a sunroof that looked factory, but that back in the early 1980s...

SG-30 books showed NO sunroof Cudas or B-Fishes built with factory (ASC) sunroofs in 1970. I know I've never seen one. Only year was 1972 for the Plymouths.

Mine does not have the little pop-up front air foil. Interesting is right.

There were no regular production factory sunroof cars built by Chrysler prior to the option being offered on 1969 Chargers. The earliest 1969 sunroof Charger in the registry is sunroof car number 7 which was built in the third week of October, 1968. There is one exception to this in my mind - Chrysler had ASC install a sunroof in a 1968 Charger for the purpose of photographing the option and advertising the new feature in the October issue of Car and Driver (Photo attached). Since Chrysler headquarters officially ordered it up, in my mind you could call it a factory sunroof car. This car has yet to surface.

Barry (Alaskan_TA) mentions a possible scenario for the car in this thread. Since the sunroof was a popular item over in Europe, and this car did see its final assembly across the pond - its possible that the sunroof was added before the car rolled out of the assembly area. If you could prove that was the case - it might add a little value, and add a little interest to the story of the car. But in the end, Chrysler headquarters did not originally designate that particular car to come with the sunroof option.
