OK How to ID a 71 Power Brake booster? - 03/26/21 08:13 PM

Trying to get a grasp on what a 1971 Power Brake booster looks like.
Application: 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda 440+6 4 Speed Front disc brakes
1. It should be cadmium plated correct? With a bare master cylinder?
2. Where or is there a date code on it?
3. Where is the PN on it?

Photos of a correct unit?

I researched this subject for my V code ‘71 Challenger, and what I have found is that there could either be a black painted Bendix booster, same part as used in ‘70, or a cad plated style made by Midland Ross. I’m not sure if both were used all year, or if the Bendix was used earlier in the production run and then was transitioned to the Midland Ross later in the cycle.
The master cylinders used starting in 71 were finished in a gray parkerized coating that resembled bare steel, though that’s based on NOS ones I’ve seen, I don’t know if 1971 production era master cylinders were still painted black like disc brake Mopar MCs were in ‘67 through ‘70.

That's what I have too! My car was built in October '70, the Bendix booster and MC were on it when I bought it, so I can't say if that is how it was when it rolled off the assembly line.

I have several NOS 71 midland Ross and the part no and date are on the aluminum tag held by the bolt that holds the band that holds the two halves together.

But the corrosion coating specified for a part to be sold out of stock by a dealer can be different then what was specified for assembly line. Example the MC Lid of the Bendix sold as NOS. They were plated and not black. My understanding that this became the standard for what a car should have being restored. Yet that is not how it came off the assembly line. They were painted black. Yet you still see highly restored examples of cars with plated lids on bendix power disc cars of the 67 to 71 vintage. Plus the vendors changed. Hence all those different examples especially for the 71 up B/E bodies.

Very cool. So if someone needed one, are they available through parts sources either reproduction or rebuilt or even new?

Any thoughts on the notion that early 71 cars had painted boosters and later cars had cadmium plated.

1971 Hemi Engine = Black Bendix Booster

Midland Ross Boosters like stated where Cadium Plated

Did 440 cudas come with Midland Ross brake boosters from the factory in 71?

Yes the Midland was used on drum (4 whl) and disc/drum cars, only the Bendix was used on HEMI equipped cars...

The hemi cars used a unique and valuable Bendix booster and master cylinder. Both carryovers from 1970 and both painted black.
Some 71 non hemi E bodies got the carryover from 1970 model year standard Bendix boosters, which are black. But most seem to have the Midland Ross booster which is plated. I’ve never seen a Midland Ross painted black, so the one on eBay must have had a rattle can paint job done in it at some point.
1971 is a very interesting year for E bodies because many things changed on them over the course of the production year. Some things like the changeover of the 340 engine from one plant that painted them orange, to a different plant that painted them blue, are well documented. Others like the booster are more of a mystery, 2 manufacturers were used, but was there a definite transition time on the line, or were both installed concurrently for a time?

My 71 Cuda 383 4 speed, with 22.000 miles, bought with 17.000 miles in 1985 has a Bendix painted black. Built January 15. ALso my 71 Challenger 440 six pack has a Bendix in black, but more miles and just bought..so not certain if it was changed. But car has been on storage for several decades...tires are late seventies with thread in brand new condition. So probabli it has never been changed. Built march 71

I was looking at Rock Auto last night, & they have boosters listed. Some are send yours in & it gets rebuilt, & you get yours back. Some are just indicated to be rebuilt units, but all look to me like OE. I've never paid enough attention to them to be able to ID a Midland Ross from a Bendix. Check em out.

They come from the dealerships parts Dept long long ago. It seems like “ in a galaxy far, far away, as well. I had a buddy that worked at the local dealership that really liked me. He was the owners son and loved muscle cars. I had a 70 AAR and a Superbird at the time. I could go in and buy parts at a slight discount all the time. When Chrysler was going through the turmoil of the 80’s bankruptcy, he sold me all kinds of parts real cheap. They were cheap even for that day. I bought 4 each of the masters cly for my 70 Bird and my 70 Cuda. I also bought four 70 style sure grip units and four 71 brake boosters. The 70 booster was no longer available. One was in a kit like the one pictured. The cost for all this stuff? $25 for each. I bought heads, W2 stuff, you name it. This was before I was married. Hemi stuff was scares and I did not need any of that. Some guys had foresight and money. They bought lots of stuff.

On the 1971 318 Challenger I got from original owner had a Midland Cad plated one just like Mastershake shows.
That car was not messed with by owner.

EK3 showed pictures of a plated Midland Ross booster, my 71 and the rusty one I posted pictures of are both Bendix, just to keep everything clear. You can’t keep track of the players without a scorecard!

So lets boil this down to what findings we have.
I enter a judged show in a 71 440+6 Cuda. I have a Midland Ross Plated booster. Am I going to be told that the booster is incorrect?

A simple answer is no. Only the first 71 cars got the black Bendix. I had one of those cars that was early built and it had lots of leftover 70 parts in the brake system per date codes. it was parted out but I have the build sheet and parts. It had 70 style seats. Those NOS 71 Midland ROSS units I have are dated and have the correct part NOS stamped on the tags for 71 cars. They were made in mid to late 1970.

Thanks all!
Im still a little confused on part numbers being correct for the 71 440+6 4 speed from disc.
I have been told:
3461264
3579272

I just found a 3580152. Any idea on that application?

I found a build date on the car of November 70 so this all may be for naught. Should this car have the 70 painted unit?
