Bummer, Goodyear buys Cooper tire. Need tire size for b-body

Bummer, Goodyear buys Cooper tire. Need tire size for b-body - 02/23/21 02:11 AM

Well my favorite Muscle car tire isn’t by Cooper called the ‘Cobra’ just got bought by Goodyear and the prices went up within a few days that he same set of tires I was about to buy will now cost $100 more! down

Still prefer Conra’s to the BFG’s as those were quieter, rode nicer, had a better grip and cost MUCH LESS. So I’m in the process of getting new tires for my 1972 Charger and was trying to consider tire sizes. 15X7 rims, may go bigger in the rear. Thinking tire size, what would look good and drive nice on it. 235, 245, 255 and is it worth putting 275/60R on the rear? Anyone with some ideas or example pics? Planning on getting 5 tires now as I will need one for a spare.

That is a nice color on the car.

That may be the tip of the iceberg. Cooper owns M/T tires.

15" X 8" Rear - 275/60

15" X 7" Front - 245/60

With the 8" rim , no one makes a decent trim ring that fills in the extra gap

Yeah, it’s 1972 EB5, factory color option.

M/T owned by Goodyear owner? Dang

That tire profile looks good on it, the rear looks good. I’m planning on colored steel wheels with dog dishes, so not worried about trim rings. Thanks for posting a pic. up

Well there goes two more tire companies to sh!t. Damn shame but damn good looking Charger. I love the idea of painted steelies and dog dishes. That is going to look good.

I run Coopers a lot and like them. Not only have they been good tires but Cooper was about the last source for quality 14" tires. Now that Goodyear bought them three things are going to happen (one apparently already has) 1) the price will go up, 2) all manufacturing will be moved overseas, and 3) the quality will sink to the rest of the crap Goodyear sells.

I've used Coopers in the past. Great looking tire, good price and wide selection of sizes. Best thing is they are well made right here in the USA!

Cooper owned Mickey Thompson, Mastercraft, Avon, Dick Cepek, Dean, Roadmaster, and Starfire tire lines. Goodyear picking them up may wipe out a lot of value line and specialty competition in the market.

Starfire

Fleet Farm was selling those - Every once in awhile buy 3 get 4th free

Man I ran SETS of those on my wife’s 2001 Pontiac Sunfire for the last 200,000 miles

Car got crushed with just under 300,000 miles - Best car I ever owned as far as maintenance

Man those Starfire tires where cheap and honestly was pretty damn happy with them even in WI winters

Saw this on the news last night. The fact that MT is going to Goodyear has me concerned. I run the PBR by MT and hope Goodyear doesn't screw them up.

Me too but there is a reason they have been nicknamed goodlucks.

I quit buying them years ago because they went to crap.

A sign of the times, Goodyear didn't need Cooper, Goodyear wanted less competition.

Same here! We run M/T's and would hate to go to another brand.

We bought Goodyear Assurances a few years ago for the wife's daily driver and those were the biggest pile of a tire I have ever owned!

Had three Sunfires/Cavaliers around this house that the kids drove the wheels off of!! Great little beater cars. Youngest daughter beat hers all the way to Norfolk, ran it around there for 2 years while in school and beat it all the way back here! Paid 4k for that one with 40k miles...sold it for $1800 120k miles later.

I also am bummed about the Cooper deal....I need to buy tires for 3 of my 4 cars and was looking at Cooper(I have had many sets before and really liked them) now I'm unsure because I haven't had a "good" set of Goodyears in a very long time.

Local Fleet Farm has there buy three get fourth free on Cooper Tires

Also Starfires are on sale for $60.00 per tire for the Jeep Renegade

Looks like I am spending money for my wife’s Outlander Sport this weekend and buying the Starfires and putting them in the garage

One of the reasons Goodyear gave for the purchase is that it would immediately start adding to profitability. In my opinion as long as these brands remain profitable they will be around.

That being said it anything is possible.

Like any business, they will strip the profits from whereever, then when it starts to decline, they will kill that product line . . . sad to see. I like the Cooper Cobra tires, used those on my 70 Sport Satellite . . . was thinking I would need another set in few years . . .maybe time to purchase now before things really change ?????

Re: Bummer, Goodyear buys Cooper tire. Need tire size for b-body - 02/25/21 01:26 PM

More specifically, Goodyear will first cut the slow movers, and focus only on the "profitable" sizes, which will only speed the decline, and all the while, increasing prices, as there is nowhere else to shop.

We have seen this numerous times before.

Well it don't say anything about the Cobra line of tires, so it should be fine. Goodyear would have waited til people dies before recalling tires.

Re: Bummer, Goodyear buys Cooper tire. Need tire size for b-body - 02/28/21 08:33 PM

I hope my post gets some attention so this leads me to a question(s). With the merger I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to buy Cooper tires anymore? I know the 275/60/15s are now made in Mexico according to TireRack. I looked at some 235/75/15 Goodyears and lots of reviews rated them not so great. So, at this point I'm just wondering if something like Milestar RWL tires would be okay to buy or even Hankook Ventus tires?

My last set of Cooper Cobras I bought in 2006 were made in the USA but, I need to replace them so they are getting hard and past time to replace them. I'm mainly a cruising or highway driving type guy. I also saw that the BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires are made in Mexico as well plus even if they are made in the USA I don't think the rubber is the same quality due to more recent regulations regarding rubber. Also, seems like most 15" tires are made overseas rather it be Mexico, Taiwan, or India.

440,000 tires across 9 lines. WOW!

This huge recall may have played a role in Goodluck's acquisition of Cooper:

It might also trigger a bad faith escape clause.

Back when I had the bee I think I was running either 265 or 275's on 8" rims. I was using the nascar yellow tires on steel painted rims with dog dishes. the fronts would rub in tight corners sometimes but I loved the look.
There is lots of room in the back for a wide tire.
