68 Charger 3 on the tree - 12/29/20 03:00 PM

Hey guys. Just bought a 68 , 225 slant with manual 3 speed shift on the column. MyMopar says they built 2 but I don't believe that. You guys know where to get accurate production numbers? Thanks

Don't know where to get production numbers but there can't be many. In all my years the only other one I saw was a '70 Slant Six Charger with the three-on-the-tree.

Slant 6 Chargers are extremely rare. I cant say for sure if Ive ever seen one in person. And I cant speak for the validity of the 2 made . But neat car none the less

This is one of those cases when rare doesn't necessarily = highly valuable

There was a red /6 3sp 68 Charger in my hometown in the late 70s. Pretty beat up and very rusty, didn't even have a muffler. It was the guys $100 wintertime car, and after he got 2 or 3 years out of it, it went to the boneyard. I imagine there were more than 2 built..

I've only seen 2 Slant 6 '68 Chargers since 1968 - both in Calif - but don't recall which trans they had.
Both were parked, ignored, but restorable.
Gotta be one of the rarest engine/body combinations made, I think.

sometime in the mid 70's [1970's guys, NOT 1870's laugh2 and you know who you two are !] there was a 68 or 69 charger go across the auction block in Mercer, pa. that was a slant 6, 3 on the tree. i looked it over just for parts for mine or to part out at my junkyard. i can't remember what it brought, but was higher than the NADA book i always carried, so it went to other pastures.
that was the only one i have ever seen in my life. it was a typical western pa car with the usual rust problems, but from what i remember, it seemed to run well.

I appreciate the responses for sure. Yes this is original. G1 green black vinyl top black interior. I travel quite a bit to snag mopars and found this one five miles from my house. I bought it from the original owner and have all the paperwork and a couple great stories. Authentic for sure. Wish I could keep it and hoping the buyer leaves it alone.

There was one here in South Florida back in the late 90's. 68 Charger, slant 6 and 3 peed manual. The owner was in or Chrysler club at the time. He gave me a ride in it.
Ran pretty good with a slant 6. He dumped the clutch and did a few burnouts. I also agree that there probably were more than 2 or 3 built in 68. Never saw another 68 Charger with slant 6 ever again.

for reasons UNKNOWN the "US shipped 1968 Charger OPTION & ACCESSORY Report" is in ERROR - it shows 0 "zero" 3-speed manual transmission installed ***** the 4-speed numbers are in ERROR also blush
the 3-speed manual (column shift) transmission was the STANDARD transmission behind the 318 V8 & the mid-year introduced 225 /6 (an automatic transmission was a ~$200 OPTION)

from WARD's AUTOMOTIVE YEARBOOK (1968 model year):

96,108 = total 1968 Dodge Chargers

90.4% = 86,881 = total 1968 Dodge Chargers with automatic transmission
7.2% = 6,920 = total 1968 Dodge Chargers with 4-speed manual transmission (all floor shift & 383, 440, HEMI)
2.4% = 2,307 = total 1968 Dodge Chargers with 3-speed manual transmission (all column shift & 225, 318)

99.0% = 195,147 = total 1968 Dodge Chargers with V-8
1.0% = 961 = total 1968 Dodge Chargers with /6

the manner in which these numbers are calculated results in a number that is accurate to +/- 48 cars (0.05%)
"IF" the installation rate for the 3-speed manual transmission was the same for 225 & 318 powered Chargers, ~60 /6 Chargers would have been built with the 3-speed manual transmission for the 1968 model year

Really?

More assumptions?

Is the red color an indicator of a HUGE assumption or ?

Well, I think it safe to say the car is rare. This was not an attempt to garner more margin on the sale. I just think it's a little fun when you find something you've never seen before searching out the history and info on the car. Kinda like pulling the seats and seeing what's underneath.

Pretty sure my buddy has one in his OLD wrecking yard in Montana . . . not sure if it's 68/69 or 70 though, hit REAL hard in front and rear . . . but slant 6, 3 on tree . . .

Re: 68 Charger 3 on the tree - 12/30/20 08:40 PM

I saw a slant six 70 Charger in a PA junkyard about 20 years ago. Only one I have ever seen. The upper door panels were steel like on a Belvedere, not sure if that was factory or if they had been swapped but the car had essentially no options. I should have taken the tag. I also know of a 71 Barracuda with the low horse /6, very rare animal. Don't remember if either car had a stick.

In 1968 and 1969 the only Charger price class choices were the XS or the XP. Starting in 1970 Dodge added an XH which was the stripper Charger that had no upper door pads.

There was a light green one down the street from us growing up. It now has a fresh paint job and a 528 hemi in it.

“More assumptions?” Ah, no, sounds more like a very educated extrapolation to me. twocents twocents
