Why would I NOT want to buy a new Scat Pack Charger?

Why would I NOT want to buy a new Scat Pack Charger? - 12/28/20 08:31 PM

I think these Charger Scat Pack cars are badass! There's a $4,850 FCA bonus for buying a new one now. I was hoping to also get a year-end deal. I know I will be dealing with crappy gas mileage, higher auto insurance and our insane registration fees here in California. I'm just stuck with those things. What I'd like to get from you guys who have one or know about them: What issues should I be concerned about with the car itself? Any other advice? This would also be the first new car I've ever purchased (I'm 59 years old!)

Just three things I know of

1. Warping door panels linky

2. Uconnect / radio issues

3. Some people have had lifter / engine issues when equipped with MDS

If you elect for a Chrysler max care warranty, it will NOT cover the door panels. It IS covered under the base warranty.

My son and brother both had Scat Pack Challengers. They both recently traded them for Scat Pack Chargers. My sons is a wide body. As well as they liked their Challengers, they like their new Chargers even better.

Looks like the trim panel issue is like what they had on the 93-8 Grand Cherokee's. You either tried to repair or just replace them. When I worked at the dealers, parts, the tech's just replaced the panels. That way no one got married to a comeback.

Buying a low miles used one might be wiser unless you are swimming in money? I don't follow the new Chargers, but there are plenty of pampered low miles Challengers for sale on CL and used car lots here.

Look at one on 12/30. Then get it on 12/31. They will almost do anything to get the sales up by end of year.

It's funny, I'd never heard of such a thing until I got my 2016. Got it in April 2018 w/ 2086 miles, it went in service in August 2017, front passenger door panel was already warped, two rear followed in short order, drivers front only developed a small "bump". These panels appear identical in every respect to what I had on my 2013, never a problem in 5 years. While I was researching it, I found it was wide spread affecting other even high end manufacturers. I found the gorilla glue and popsicle stick fix on the charger forums. My dealer replaced all four, said the problem had been corrected. Now I'm not so sure after seeing this class action suit.

I should take you shopping with me, lol. Well done on that price. My local dealer didn't want to move much from the $45K sticker on a new 2020. He gave me his "best price" of $39.5, and that included the $4,850 rebate!

Re: Why would I NOT want to buy a new Scat Pack Charger? - 12/29/20 02:47 AM

I tired to price out an order a new challenger and the first dealer wouldn’t give me a price. Said I had to wait on it to arrive. Uh [censored].

Second one gave a price, no idea of it would be a shifty deal too once you actually pulled the trigger. My frustration with it is more about dodge. They won’t let you custom order a car. I know that sounds funny, but there are literally things blocked out from being added. Like the six piston brembos on a 1320. Can’t get the wheels you want on certain things, even though they are listed as same size. I would get most all I want on a TA, except they won’t let you delete the flat black top. Can’t get certain seats with certain things. I can’t find anything close enough on a lot and neo got her can a dealer, if I have to pay the extra to get it ordered so be it, just flippin let me.

I told the sales guy it’s more likely I’ll find a 50 year old car to my specs than a “custom” ordered brand new car. They won’t even ask the factory to override something as simple as that paint. They’d make more money to send it on down the line the way I want it. I contacted dodge directly and they won’t even respond.

I’d say if you find what you want on the lot you can get a good deal here at year end.

I think they are great cars, my sister in law has had two shaker 6 speed challengers. I don't like the six speed because I am a drag racer and the first gear ratio is horrible for that. An 8 speed in a scat pack would be a blast. If I were in the market to by me a daily driver right now I would buy a 1320 model and race the doors off of it.

That’s interesting. The dealers didn’t explore that, just said get lost. One even told me to go back to ford when I explained how easy it is to build on their site. I bought an expedition earlier in the year and I don’t think I found one thing you couldn’t add.

If I knew I could sell my 52 yr old Cuda and 87 monte hauler I'd have a new Scat Pak. They have decent prices in Va.

I've had several Charger 5.7's but not scatpak and love them all. Never any serious problems. First I've heard of the door panel issue!

EVERYONE has an opinion.. but what the fugg is that all about ?? !!

All considered ... absolute requirement for premium fuel .... huge additional insurance costs ... and almost TWICE THE COST of the vehicle !!

I’ll stick with my Scatty xmaseek

It is a heavy car and has a tall tire. With a slick where you could rev it up and dump the clutch it might do OK. Trying to get it out on the stock tires resulted in either a horrible bog, or when I got more aggressive it spun and tire hopped real bad right as I got the clutch out. I only got three passes in it though and it wasn't mine and she didn't want my brother in law to know she let me make passes in it LOL.

The gears are nice and tight after first through. If I remember right I was having to grab 4th just before the traps.

Your right its just my opinion, based on my personal experience.

I bought a new SP, had it for about a year.
I sold it and bought a used HC with 300 miles on it., still had over 2 years of warranty. The HC cost 15K more than I paid for the SP.
The insurance cost did not go up at all.

The performance difference was huge, no comparison.

A 300 mile HC ?

Two questions.... what kind of depreciation was that ? .., and what’s the reason for getting rid of it ? eek

What this guy says!!! I waited til I was in late 50's. HC is the way to go, same kind of deal Matt got. You won't regret it. And I kept my 50 some odd year old E-body, also .Jim

Now the drool factor is something to consider when getting either vehicle!

The HC gets the bigger biggrin there

I'm interested in this subject too but am not up to par on the new stuff. Can you get a Charger Scat Pak with a shaker? I'm torn between the Challenger and Charger. I'd like either one with a Shaker and sunroof smile.

Re: Why would I NOT want to buy a new Scat Pack Charger? - 01/02/21 01:39 AM

Surprisingly, the 70 gets more looks and interest than the HC. My 96 Viper Roadster seems to garner more attention than both the Challengers, tho. Im past the attention thing, i wanna enjoy what i worked years for. The HC is hands down the most fun to drive. all of these cars are manual tranny's cause that was my first car back in the day. A lower first gear would definately be a plus in the HC, but as much as i use it, it isnt gonna be changed. I'm sure whatever the OP decides on, he will be happy. We all have different tastes. Jim

It gets boring to drive because you only get to use 5% of the vehicles capacity. Don't miss the car but miss 6 speed scat pack challenger I had before the charger.
