518 to 727 swap?

518 to 727 swap? - 11/21/20 05:25 AM

I'm wanting to do the opposite of what most people do, I have a 1990 2wd Ramcharger with a TBI 360/518 combo that I'm converting to a 360 carb with a 727, what do I have to do to the transmission crossmember to put a 727 in? Or do I have to get an earlier 727 crossmember? I have the throttle body to carb issues figured out, it's the tranny swap that is giving me problems.

Why get rid of the overdrive?

But, iirc the cross member needs moved forward, the holes are probably there. The mount itself might be different. You will need a longer driveshaft. Linkage swaps 100 percent. Use your existing speedo drive. Cooler lines are same.

I'm wondering why as well. With it being a 1990 it should be a non-lockup model as well. Either control OD with just a toggle switch or automate it with a vacuum and pressure switch. It's damn easy to do.

If your 727 is also a non-lockup model then the converter will swap over.

The TBI blows though and lots of people ditch it for a carb.

i believe the cooler lines for the 727 are 5/16" while the lines for the 518 are 3/8".
the case fitting size of the 727 is 1/8" NPT. i'm not sure if the 518 case is the same or not, but if not, a simple fitting change for the 727 is all that's required to use your 518 lines.

I went the other way with my '82, 904 to A500. I fabricated a mount for the A500 (3 bolt vs 2 bolt) and relocated the crossmember. I would have been better off with the correct crossmember. Totally forgot about driveline angles. The elevation needs to change as well. I found that there were different crossmember part numbers by year, even though they seem indistinguishable from each other.

Thanks guys, we are building a street toy, 1990 2wd Ramcharger, no need for OD on this, have a fresh built 727, new high stall converter as well. Eliminating the computer and TBI, going with a carb on a strong 360. I was just hoping an earlier crossmember from a mid 80's or so pickup would bolt in.

I don't remember for certain. I recall I was looking for Ramcharger crossmembers, I can't recall why I wasn't looking into pickups, an obvious connection. I'm thinking I knew something then I've forgotten. Good luck with your swap. If you elect to keep the OD, you can operate it with two toggle switches, which I did, or you can automate it with some pretty simple mods while losing the computer.
