73 roadrunner 318 trans rooster comb

I have a 73 Plymouth Roadrunner 318. It doesn't want to start in park all the time. Have to put it in neutral. I was told to replace the rooster comb. Where do I find one to replaace it. PM or call Jack at 330-719-0606 or e mail at moparjack67@sbcglobal.net. THANKS! Thanks for the add moparts!

That is part of the valve body. Any shop that has parts transmission should have one. You may have to buy the entire valve body . I’m not sure if a 727 one will fit on a 904 body. It may just be the switch. I’d change that first. It’s on the outside. I had one loose on a 518 and I took it out and tack welded it with my mig.

Have you tried adjusting the shift linkage. It can be sensitive to position.

I have never seen a rooster comb wear out. Not saying it won't but I haven't seen one.

Check all the linkage bushings, then have somebody move the shifter to all the positions while you are under it looking at it. It is not uncommon to have a transmission line or busted mount cause the shift linkage to hit and not engage park fully.

X2, I bet it's just a linkage adjustment issue . . . or maybe the neutral safety switch might need to be looked at . . . OP stated it won't start in Park sometimes . . .

As an aside . . . I used 72 or 73 (can't recall the year) exhaust manifolds on my 70 Sport Satellite - they have the larger openings to match exhaust port on 340/360 heads, but still look like 318 manifolds !! Even stamped 318 - RR !!! . . . the right side didn't even have the provision for heat riser drilled !!

The late model roosters have plastic on them that can break. Pull the pan and look. Available on Ebay $10.99 . Look up 727 rooster comb. 904/727 are the same.

This I did not know. Learned me something new.

But I rarely work on any Mopar RWD transmissions newer than 74.

The plastic shoe only affects the back-up light operation, NSS is the metal part of the rooster comb.

As stated, probably a linkage problem; look for missing/sloppy plastic bushings. While holding the key in START, slam the shift handle hard against Park.

i agree with what john states above.
however, one time i stumbled into a situation where the plastic started to deform and a tiny tab had folded over one of the metal tabs and stuck there. i can't remember whether it was the park or neutral one. i just whittled it away with my pocket knife and that was that.
i would start with checking the linkage adjustment and look close at the bushings for slop.
