4 bbl A12 Air Cleaner Base - 11/07/20 02:47 AM

Anyone know if there is a company out there making A12 hood air cleaner bases for a 4 barrel carburetor? It's been a long time since Steve Matthews (Paint it Black) was on the site. Not sure what became of him. He's the only one I know of that produced them and did so out of fiberglass. Seems like there should be a source for these somewhere.

The 4bbl air grabber setup? Those are available in steel, not sure about glass. I have a reproduction one on my car.

I had one of Steve's a12 setups like you described on my 69 Cnet with 6pak hood. Excellent quality. I believe he passed away from Cancer. Was doing treatments when I made my purchase years ago.
Great product idea/line he had. Hope someone took over for him, and we all just haven't learned of it yet.

L,

I think your SOL on this, IIRC Steve passed away about 5+ years ago, someone might have one for sale?, might want to place a want ad?

I don't recall anyone else offering this in glass or steel, might want to think about fabbing one out of a steel repro or fiberglass A12 6 pack base, by combining an A12 6bbl base with a 4bbl base off a similar aircleaner (E body Shaker carb base/4bbl)... lots of choices out there to fab steel or glass...there's a little bit of flange on that E body Shaker base to swim it around the bottom of an A12 pizza pan to get the base/seal where it may line up just right.... you can either hide it under a six pack filter/lid or use a round element/round lid?.....

OP said A12, that's the lift off B body hood cars in 1969 that had the big rectangular pizza pan air cleaners

Guys thank you for the replies. I’m sorry I had to leave the site for a day. I did some searching on moparts and I found one of Steve’s old posts from 2014. I’m attaching a picture of one of Steve’s units. He really did beautiful work. I wonder if anyone still has his molds. Andy, as you can see I’m looking for the, “broiler pan“. Mike, I think buying both of those in fiberglass would be my best bet because I am not a welder, although If the meeting surfaces are flat enough, I might be able to bond the two pieces with panel bond adhesive.

Steve just dropped off the map. I feared that he may have died and I’m very sorry even at this late date to hear of his passing. He was a very nice person to me and we had a lot of good conversations about his work and our cars.

I did a quick look for steel and fiberglass parts to make this work. Holy smokes. The reproduction steel bases for the a12 cars are outrageously expensive! I figured the e body shaker parts would be pricy. I think I could build a complete 6bb intake and carbs for the price of the two pieces! Looks like the only option here is fiberglass and at that, I’ll still have $300 in parts. Not terrible. I’m starting to see why Steve built molds for those bases since a lot of people use the fiberglass lift off hoods. Its a bit of a niche market and it’s unfortunate nobody else makes one.
