Help!! Going crazy[ier] w/318 - 03/31/09 12:54 AM

Ok, here's the deal.

I have vehicle with a '71 318 BBD carbed engine. Granny-gear 4-speed. Through 1st and 2nd, it pulls like a freight train up to about 4K RPM. I don't like turning it tighter than that.

Go into 3rd or 4th, at around 2,500 - 2,600 it falls flat on its face.

Here's what I have done to date:

Fresh distriutor
Fresh plug wires
Fresh plugs.
The ballast tests good.
Haven't tested the coil, yet, but it has been great, it is an MSD blaster.

What's next? I need to make this rig dependable! It is my driver!

Take off the gas line from the pump inlet & plug it. hookup a can of gas to the fuel pump inlet & take her out.

wouldnt 2400 rpm in 1st or 2nd use the same amount of gas as it would in 3rd at the same rpm (or there abouts)

IF you are running-it-through the gears .... you could be running out of fuel pressure.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it.

Now if it is NOT THAT .... see if the exh heat crossover is plugged in the intake manifold. Your choke could be closing.

Correct but a partly plugged sock for instance will alot times not end up finally starving it out until you're into 3rd gear & the delivery cant keep up.

Well, problem solved. Back to school for me...

Dooh...fuel filter.

The other stuff didn't hurt - hadn't had the plugs changed in 12 years.
