Correct Alternator Mounting

Correct Alternator Mounting - 10/22/20 11:25 AM

I am trying to figure out the "correct" way to mount the alternator to the head. I know how this works but I wanted to know the factory correct way to set this up with the sleeves and spacers. The mounting hole rear ear of the alternator is oversized and clearly needs a sleeve to center the mounting bolt. Then you have the long spacer that goes between the ears and the shorter one that bridges the gap from the rear ear to the head.

I have a short sleeve and a long sleeve. Do I need to take one of these and grid it flush with the ear and just use the spacers? My factory stuff is long gone and I wanted to do this correctly while I am swapping the alternator.

Any picture or description of how the spacers and sleeve all should fit together would be appreciated. This is a 400 based stroker with A/C.

Thanks! thumbs

rear ear has a bigger hole.
short bushing goes in that.
big spacer goes between the ears.

You need the sliding bushing that goes into the rear case mounting hole.

I have that short sleeve/bushing. I just didn't know where the longer one fit in but I am guessing that is an aftermarket convenience to eliminate the long spacer?

So you do have 3 bushings?

AC and non AC mounts different and I think that changes the spacers size

this is A/C

this is non A/C

So you can see the diff location of the bracket... in front or rear of the front mountning ear of alternator.

On both setups the spacers are acomodated by the rear alt ear bushing.

BUT the big spacer.... I guess is a bit shorter on A/C cars to accept the bracket location on rear of the front ear

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I am defining the "bushing/sleeve" as the large roll-pin that presses through the rear mounting ear. I define the "spacer" as the larger cylinder that just spaces and won't fit through the mounting hole...

It sounds like the longer bushing the alternator came with must have been a convenience but not technically "correct" as it eliminates the bushing+ spacer. So going from the head out - short spacer, short bushing (in rear ear), long spacer, bracket, front ear. Right?

you need the bushing on alternator, and both spacers, short againts the rear bracket and larger between alt ears. Bushing fits right in the middle of both spacers.

the bushing uses to be included with the alt. Spacers are part of the bracket mounting kit ( &/or bolt kit ). Mounting kits don't include the bushing.

The short bushing is always there. Then the internal spacer to prevent breaking the aluminum ears sit between. 2 different ones depending on whether bracket is inside or outside alternator. Then a spacer between head and backside of alternator to align with your pulleys. The sizes varied depending on the motor type. SB, BB, Hemi. Normal BB Non AC the alternator bracket is on the outside. Sometimes you may need a washer to get it right.

this is correct on A/C cars. On non A/C the bracket goes in front of alt ear. Mainly because the front bracket mounts further front into the water pump housing. On A/C cars those locations are used by the A/C compressor, so alt bracket ( diff one of course ) fits in deeper locations. NOW this would make a diff spacers length too between A/C and non A/C. I GUESS the longer one being a bit longer too
