2002 Minivan brakes dragging

First, the van: 2002 Chrysler Voyager short wheel base 3.3L, disc/drum.

It appears the brakes are dragging. Both fronts are hot to the touch after driving. Hot enough that you can't even touch the lugnuts.
Last spring I changed the pads and cleaned/greased the pins, so I think it might be an master cylinder issue.

How should I go about diagnosing this?

after driving open the bleeders one at a time and see if they squirt fluid. If it just leaks some then its not the master hanging up. If it squirts a stream then its.holding pressure some where. Could be the master or could be something downstream from there. Be sure you aren't accidently dragging the brakes.

This makes sense. I'll try it tomorrow. If it squirts- it could be MC or hoses or something with ABS maybe?

Done a few on my Rams and a set on the '04 Neon, AND a set on one of the '71 Challengers; seems to be a common problem on Dodge products. Have to thank the Moparts Member that diagnosed the issue.

It is most likely the calipers. But frankly, it doesn't matter whether it is the calipers or the hoses. Go ahead and change them all while you are at it. It is no more work to change hoses and calipers than it is to change either one alone. And if you shop it out, none of it is very expensive. We have changed a lot of the calipers that were stuck and a few hoses that were collapsed, but have never seen a master cylinder that was holding the front brakes on.

It is common enough, that I go to a pick-a-part yard and look for a van with re-manned calipers and new hoses. Usually $30+/- will buy it all. That generation of van used 2 different calipers; one for rear drum and one for rear disc. They are easy to tell apart.

Happened to both of my 06 Chrysler minivans, both times it was, the calipers, they are well known for issues. Could be other problems like mentioned above but if you google it you will find mostly caliper issues.

Hi Dart , what color is the brake fluid ? clear , coffee milk , dark coffee , or GOD FORBID , BLACK COFFEE ? ronnie brake fluid flushing and changing is pretty important on newer stuff , especially with ABS . HUGE bills if you don't !

Well, I guess that's possible and the owner's manual says to change it regularly. But I have to say, that of all the stuff we work on, I have personally NEVER seen an instance where not changing the brake fluid has caused a problem. Never.

Just one example; our shop has an '02 Town and Country van with 245k miles that we still use for towing cars and hauling parts home from St. Louis. Most of the brake fluid in it is original. Some got changed when we replaced the front calipers, but most is original. No problems so far. That is only one example of hundreds of vehicles we have worked on that still had the original brake fluid. And many, like the Town and Country, had ABS too.

So, while it may be a good idea to replace the brake fluid, for the vast majority of vehicles, it is a waste of time and money. Now, flushing the cooling system and putting in fresh anti-freeze is something that absolutely should be done regularly. But most people don't and we see the consequences of that all the time.

Okay, I got out there today and cracked the bleeder screw and the fluid just dribbled out. So we're going to replace the calipers.
