what's the best break in oil to use for a fresh rebuild..non detergent / detergent ? 30 weight ??

What is it, who built is, flat tappet? Roller cam ? shruggy

was built by a local engine rebuilder here called precision engine...everything is stock...standard bore, stock cam and lifters (flat tappet), standard main and rod bearings.new timing chain, heads reconditioned, etc, etc...

We've always used Valvoline VR1 on our FT break-ins, never a problem.

What are your clearances?
We run on the tight side, so 10-30 for us.

I've used Gibbs Driven break in oil for my last couple of flat tappet builds.

rod bearings were plstigaged... .0015/ .002 clearance...cylinders honed, new rings...right now the engine is tight as you hand crank it...I do believe this is fairly normal with new rings, etc...

rod bearings were at .0015 /.002 plasitgage...cylinders honed with new rings..main bearing clearances to spec also...engine is tight when hand cranked...I think that is fairly normal with the new rings, etc...

That's pretty tight. I'd use a 10W-30, pre-oil it before startup.
Fill the carb bowls & set timing so it fires quickly.
Driven, Lucas, and others have break-in oils, haven't had problems with any of them.

this is my thoughts as well. did you check the lifters for rotation before you installed the intake ?

as the saying goes : "no one will know if your bearing clearances are a touch too loose, but everyone will know if they are too tight."

Buy a quality 5/30,10/30 or 30 break in oil. Do it right the first time. Joe Gibbs driven, Brad pen, Lucas oil. Your clearances are too tight for the age old 20/50.

Forget the ZDDP additives, how do you know that crap will mix in & work with whatever oil you are using? You don’t.
Current shelf oil has too much detergent and it fights with your expensive ZDDP so it won’t function like the bottle says it will.

I would use, and do use it, Valvoline 5w20WT petroleum based, not synthetic tsk with a zinc additive for the cam and lifters to make the initial start up and make sure it starts right away and run it at or above 1500 RPM for 20 to 30 minutes without idling twocents
I do prime all of my motors before starting them and rotate them over with the spark plugs out while priming the motor for 4 to 10 revolutions before trying to start it and then run them for the break in run scope twocents

I used 6 quarts of the Comp Cams breakin oil. Most expensive oil I've used to date, and it was only in it for a few hours at most cry
