Get it running - '68 RR

I'd pay $1500 for it and I might do the same thing. Just get it running and bomb around town with it then maybe sell it someone who wanted to fix it up. Looks super rough so driving it around would most likely become annoying, but it would take so much work to put it back together that I can see the appeal of just leaving it half rotted.

I'm too anal to just drive it around as is. Something inside me rebels against that. But I totally agree with the statement in the article "Just get it running sure beats rusting away in a farmer's field."

Yeah I think that is approach a person would have to take. Having it out driving is better than letting it rot away even if it isn't pretty to look at. If the car is running then the odds go up that someone will work on it and start to bring it back.

Cool! It reminds me of my '68 Belvedere story. Dragged if out of a buddy's field last summer after sitting for 10 years, towed it home, thrashed on it for 3-1/2 weeks then took off and put 1660 miles on it. Then in January, road tripped it to Roadkill Zip-Tie drags in Tucson with it's tired 383/727(1500 mile round trip). I just finished 4-speed swap and fresh 440. Super fun car. It's still a 50 footer but, not scared to leave it in a parking lot...

that's all i'm planning on doing to my charger, just get it running with the new engine and transmission.
when the engine is out, i will clean up under the hood, but no paint work will be done.
oops ! i forgot. frame connectors will FINALLY be installed this time around.......... sorry.

I’m glad it was rescued from the field....... but I live in a very rust prone area, and that’s pretty much how those things looked here when they were not even 10 years old.
I had beaters like that when I was in high school(70’s)........ no desire to be driving something like that anymore.

However, there are many many stages in between where it is now and “restored”.

As long as someone is enjoying it....... that’s all that matters.

Reminds me of my 1974 Duster360. I restored it in 1984 and then proceeded to put 100k miles on it ! Was great fun, reliable and did routine maintenance over the years and miles . . .however, the rust came back in the rear quarters, and rather than "fix" properly, and having other cars to drive. I just got the red coloured duct tape and taped up the rusty rear quarters - actually it blended in pretty good and kept the moisture from getting in ! . . . but once the Sport Satellite was done, and having the Duster sit outside under a car cover for a few years and then decided to sell (after 34 years of ownership) . . . never meant to have anything I couldn't or wouldn't drive . . .

So many people worry about what it looks like or how nice it is. Make it safe, make it run, go drive it and have fun. Paint doesn't make anything more fun, it's just more work lol. My car has shiny paint and its 22 years old now and starting to show its age and fail. I just can't fathom spending $10K to paint something.

I love the "get it running" theme. Not every vehicle needs a 100 point resto to be enjoyed.

I agree. I remember seeing a bunch of those cars on the road in the 70's that weren't in as good a shape as the one in the link.

I rather like it, though I'd have to lose the hood stripes and the rear shackles.
But the holes in the rear tubs and the lower quarters would have to be fixed.
And there starts the slippery slope...

I'm wondering how many cans of MP paint did they have to buy to get 3 or 4 that worked !

Why do you think the popularity of "patina" and wraps came about? The cost of a professional paint job is insane.

I love beat up old Road Runners and have driven one most of my life.

I would get that running, clean the interior, and drive it and tinker with it until the end.
