Aftermarket parts for my V10

Aftermarket parts for my V10 - 09/25/20 06:18 PM

Does anyone know, other than racing applications, if aftermarket parts exist for the 99 Ram V10. I am trying to locate a rocker arm kit (rocker arm, pedestal). The rocker arm bolt is a 5/16. I find plenty of parts for the 5.9 L but unable to locate anything for the 8L V10. I know you can purchase a mopar brand rocker arm at 25.00 ea but the pedestal has been d/c'd. Am tired of broken rocker arm bolts so I was hoping to replace the lifters, push rods, rocker arms and pedestals to see if this eliminates that problem. Thanks

There was very little aftermarket support at the time of production for that powerplant. With your issue I would be curious how similar the valvetrain is between the 5.9 and the 8.0. twocents

Ran into this a few years ago with mine. When i needed rocker arms and push rods.
I had to find used...as was unable.to locate new anywhere

Valve train is unique to a V10.
I dont think much exists in the aftermarket for them.

I believe Crower makes a rocker arm for the v-10.

I guess you found your bad lifter or more. I would probably look at the 5.9 magnum stuff to see if it can be modified to work. The lifters are probably the same and you can buy different length pushrods from Summit if need be. I forget what the V10 rocker assembly looks like. A pic would be nice. The bolt you may be able to get from ARP. Another alternative could be using adjustable pushrod guide plates and a stud kit to mount roller rockers on. The Chevy and Magnum stuff is real close and the chevy rockers work fine with a low lift cam. The Ford rockers are a tad longer I believe, like .030-.050" . So that is another thing to check. Of course you would need hardened pushrods with the guide plates. Crane also makes a conversion kit for the magnum with a guide plate and plastic insert for the pushrod to ride in. That may be anothe route for you.

488 Magnum

Is the arm a 1.7 or 1.6 ratio? Either is easy to find in either chevy, ford or even magnum arms but they cost more. Just looking at the picture I don't see why the magnum pivot won't work but I can't compare them side by side. And you need to change your oil more often.

The Crower kits come in either 1.6 or 1.7 ratio but are $1K and you still have to get studs and probably pushrods too. Not sure if those Crowers are for the Viper or truck engine and if there is a differance.

If the newer 01-03 rocker pivots are available you could re tap the holes to 3/8 and use the 01-03 pedestals and bolts the arms are the same.

Drill and tap, I would want to pull the heads off for that. Besides the chance of getting cast iron bits in the engine it gets really cramped under that cowl.

I have no idea if my rocker arm is 1.7 or 1.6 ratio. How would I find out? The pivot pedestal for the 01-03 engine with the 3/8 rocker arm bolts are also dc'd.

Go and read all the info in the link shown above on the 488 magnum.

Looking at that rocker arm comparison and the cylinder head cross section views I would be tempted to buy a couple different stud mount rocker arms and studs, singles of course an get an adjustable puhrod and play around with the pushrod length to see if something would work.

Thanks! That was some informative reading re: the V10. So, according to what I read, the stock rocker arm for the V10 is a 1.6 ratio. I also read the comparison between the V10 rocker arm/pedestal and the V8 5.9L rocker arm/pedestal. I would love to know if the mopar V8 pedestal (#53008283) which is readily available from many different sources, would be compatible with the V10 rocker arm (#5245335). Has anyone tried this combo setup and did it work?

I have my doubts the v8 rockers will work. You might look for a core motor for parts. A lot of junk yards may have them. . Craigs list has some that are available. Did you call Crower to find out the scoop on the ones they sell? Most likely they may need the 3/8 hole. If that's the case you might be able to find a 3/8 to 5/16 stud that could work.

Crower shows this kit. I am sure you could buy individual parts. The stud is 5/16 to the head and 3/8 on the rocker. This is a different design and adjustable. rockers

Individual kit is 73657-1.

If I choose to go this route, will the current stock push rods/lifters work with the 73657-1 kit?

Re: Aftermarket parts for my V10 - 09/29/20 07:15 AM

It appears the V8 rocker is too short to work. Those Crower rockers are self aligning so wouldn't need guide plates but pushrod length would be an unknown. New stock lifters should be fine.

Summit shows to have one of the Crower kits in stock. The 73657K for $1000. However they don't specifically list them for the truck engine and the application says it fits '92 - 2002 Dodge 8.0L V10, which tells me it's for the Viper engine. Will they work? Don't know.

Re: Aftermarket parts for my V10 - 09/29/20 07:51 AM

Harland Sharp also makes rockers for the Viper engine but while it appears they will work with the correct stud (5/16 bottom and 3/8 top) they are not self aligning so pushrod guide plates and hardened pushrods would be needed. The stock Viper and truck engines appear to use the same rocker, probably why it's beefier than the V8 stuff. The Viper rocker arm kits use the 3/8 - 3/8 stud but you can buy the 5/16 - 3/8 studs separately. Same as would be used on a V8 Magnum. Pushrod length is on you to figure out. You need to replace the lifters and pushrods any way so just mock it up with the old parts and see how it fits before you buy pushrods.
I loved my V10 truck and would like to build a 1st gen V10 truck but parts availability stops me. Good luck.

Ray Barton has rockers. Call people that have raced 2011 Drag Pak Challengers. They have V-10's.

The Drag Pak V-10's will be Viper Engines, which have very little interchange with the truck V-10.

I don't think they share any parts but some parts from the Viper engine may work on the truck engine.
