So I take it your shifter is a bayonet type unit and the shift lever is a bolt on stick. You can install a bolt on stick receiver in your current shifter housing or I have seen sticks modified to fit a bayonet type receiver. I think the bolt ion deal is a much better choice and you also freshen it up when you swap in the new parts Gus
Is that stick the one with a bunch of noddle bends it like the stock bench seat handle or is it flat with a bunch of bends side ways to clear the consoles? One way to find out, that or a picture would help us see it
I've personally used the #7236 handle (1967-69 Camaro 1968-72 Chevelle) in a 1969 GTX- buckets, no console- and it does not work well. Basically, 2nd gear has the stick into the driver's seat.

***CORRECTION***
I tried an 8022, not a 7236- and it was not a good fit.
