Twisted axle,re-usable?

Twisted axle,re-usable? - 08/19/20 10:44 PM

I just pulled this stock axle from my race car, relieving it from its honorable duties. I friend suggested that it could have an after-life in another car, provided it would be but in same side it came from and only used with a non hp combo. Although it is not on my agenda, I am nevertheless interested in what you think about that.

Not me !

That's a handrail or mailbox support now, in my opinion...

Have done that several times over the years and have never had a problem.

We would twist the splines on our dirt track car about 2x as much as that one is twisted, before we changed them out, and never broke one.
On a non-performance street car I wouldn't expect a problem, but definitely be sure its installed on the same side. I would not put it in something I suspected might be abused though. Gene

Why would you sell something like this you wouldn't use to someone else?

Lets see, he didn't say he wanted to give it away, correct work
How many American muscle cars do you think there are in Iceland? shruggy
I've broken two diver side axles like that, shame on me for taking a second chance after braking the first one with twists in the splines worst than his realcrazy

On an emergency and no having other option handy, I would reuse it on a regular street car for regular driver use ( including HP cars ) while trying to get a better one. I wouldn't use it on a truck being used carrying loads thought. Sure wouldn't use it having options, but sure I understand being overseas how hard would be get one.

Use it till it breaks, make hard stops till it twists back. Drivers side

I'd be looking at the outside for signs of twisting too. I've seen cars twist the axle off right at the flange.

Was that a 8 3/4 axle or some other brand and type rear axle?
I remember seeing Camaro break a axle at the outer bearing on the drivers side of a 12 bolt GM rear end on the starting line at OCIR years ago whiney That really mess his 1/4 panel up puke

Re: Twisted axle,re-usable? - 08/20/20 10:21 PM

It was a 72-74 barracuda race car. Broke the moment the tree went down so damage to the car was not terrible.

This was many years ago and I was just a spectator so I never found out what brand of axle it was. Car was a high 10 second ride.

Thanks guys for giving your opinions. Based on your replies, I think it is OK to keep it as an emergency spare axle, if nothing else is available. Axles would take about 10-14 days to be shipped from the U.S. to Iceland and the rule of thumb is that you multiply the U.S. vendor´s price by 2 to get an idea about the final price once in your hands. The highest cost factor is shipping and a VAT that varies. This x2 calculation goes for all speed parts..

Hey Cab - that reminds me of a Camaro, also @ OCIR, went over the armco that bordered the right lane, maybe 150' out.
Pretty spectacular, wasn't a wheelstand, just broke. Night-time race so the details weren't clearly visible.
IIRC it was a yellow car.

The one I saw was at a day time AHRA national race back in the early 1970s, the car was in the left lane and the axle broke off on the starting line.
I think I saw another Camaro break a Mark Williams passenger side axle at the bearing also later at a different race work

I wouldn't have a problem using it in another stockish car...of course no super hard launches.

Would like to know how far can you drive in one direction in Iceland? How many roads is there? Half of the year the lights stay on and the other half you never turn them on. I remember a picture back in grade school (50s) showing full sun at 2:00 am, is that hard to get used to? I think Iceland would be cool (pun intended) to visit.

Re: Twisted axle,re-usable? - 08/22/20 03:11 AM

Back when we were dirt track hobby stock racing, a lot of Chevy guys broke right side axles off just outside of the wheel bearings on the 10 and 12 bolt rear ends. I suspect the bearing rolling against the axle itself probably cause an over heating situation and probably took the temper out of the axles. The guys running Ford and Mopar rear axles didn't have as many problems, but most of them used bearings pressed onto the axles (8 3/4 Mopar or 9" Ford) with their own inner races. The total road system in Iceland is 8074 miles /12.995 kilometers. The ring road, where you can drive a circle via the coastline is 820 miles/1321 kilometers long. We have no darkness from late May until late July and in late December we have light hours between 10:30 am -4:30 pm. Somehow, we adapt to these fluctuations. You are welcome to contact me if you decide to visit. Enclosed is a photo I took last weekend of my Dakota, while travelling in a volcano area in the high desert.

Wow didn’t think it was that big. What’s the price of gas? Seeing a volcano would be neat! Isn’t there a few there?

Re: Twisted axle,re-usable? - 08/23/20 05:09 PM

Gas is just below U.S. $5 pr. gallon.Yikes! Yes, during the 20th century we had 45 eruptions and so far the 21st century has produced 5 eruptions. The positive sides of living here are many. For example about 80% of all houses are heated with geothermal water and the surplus water can be routed underneath driveways, via tubes, to melt snow and ice in the wintertime.
