727 trans bolt location - 07/09/20 07:02 PM
so.....my utter brilliance is on display once again. I had an empty transmission that has been sitting for years and decided to replace the filter then fill er up. Everything thing went really smooth, except after removing several bolts, notice there are two different lengths, o [censored]. No biggie, just put them back where they will bolt in, done. Then I filled her up and closed up and was done for the day. How satisfying it was!!!
Then to my utter dismay, I returned to the garage the next day to the smell of trans fluid and a puddle on the floor. So, either I placed the bolts in the wrong holes or someone broke in and loosened the bolts. So now I need to find a chart or map that shows which bolts go where. Once I see that, I have to figure which bolts are which and rearrange them without losing anymore fluid, stuff is expensive!!
Anyone have a link to said chart or map?
That said, thinking about opening a transmission shop on the side!!!!

I think the 2 longer bolts go under the shifter area but not sure.

If you look at the bolt holes you will see some go into the trans case and some go through the outside the long bolts can go to the outside holes.

If my memory serves, the factory layout used the same length bots all around. And they were sorta short.

Correct. All pan bolts are the same length.
Probably the case has a couple stripped threads and the previous person installed the long bolts there. You should have felt the bolts not going to torque if that is the case.

The bolts may be the cause of your leak, but if the trans has sat empty for years, I think I would be looking at replacing the seals on the shift lever (there is 2 seals there, an inner one around the kick down lever and an outer one around the shaft body). I'm betting you will find trans fluid running from the shift seal(s) down to the pan gasket, the running along the pan gasket to the lowest point and then dripping off. The seal at the dipstick could do the same thing. The trans cooler lines leaking at the trans connection will also appear as a pan leak, and a defective park/neutral switch will do the same thing.
I chased what I thought was a pan gasket leak for years before I discovered these other leaks that will run down on the pan gasket and make it look like its leaking. Gene

look at the rear servo pivot pin area at the rear of the case as well.
the o-ring on the pin could be bad.

Yes, and the threads can be stripped from over-torqueing. Slightly longer bolts will sometimes catch the remaining threads in a stripped hole. Visually inspect the first threads in every hole, any missing is the location of the longer bolt(s).

For the holes that don`t go all the way thru, do yourself a favor and make sure any sealer or gunk is cleaned out of those bolt holes. The bolts can bottom out on the gunk and make you think the pan is tight and it may not be.
