BB water pump housing question

BB water pump housing question - 06/27/20 12:34 PM

Does anyone have a 68 parts book? I need the part no for any 68 bb housing. Not the casting no. I’m having trouble with the measurements on the lower left thickness of the housing that the power steering pump bolts too. I’ve got a bad housing I’m trying to replace and can’t find one with the same thickness at that point. Mine measures 2.762 which is approximately .060-.080 thicker than all my other known 69-70 housing. I’ve got access to a known 68 that is 2.742. All my other 68-70 vary somewhat. My top mount is fairly consistent on all of them. This one throws my pulls alignment off. Thanks.

what about pulling the pump & pulling the "cross" a bit forward or pressing it in, whichever is needed? (support the shaft in the rear if you press the cross rearward) so as to align the pulley. if the WP pulley is too far forward a potential would be to shim the crank pulley forward (spacers are available) and spacing the alt forward. EDIT been a long time since I was there but buttonhead bolts on the wp will give more clearance from the pulley to the pump if needed

What good is the part number since it's not located anywhere on the housing?

P/N for the '68 BB housing with A/C is 2780989, without A/C is 2780988.

I assume your issue is the power steering pump alignment not anything else? What bracket are you using for PS? Spacer solve it? One short boss could be resolved with a spacer.

The part Numbers you gave tell me that they made 2 housings in 68. The non ac is the same as 69. That’s what I was looking for. I know how to tell those apart. The top hole is lots shorter for the ac one. I did not measure that one buts it’s like .200”. This housing I am replacing has two pitted surfaces that need machining so they will seal. It’s Easier to put on an aluminum one that I had handy. It’s just the difference in this bad housing is so far off from everything else I have in the shop with the same casting number. It’s hard to tell if the belt alignment was off until I get it all bolted up. I can’t use a spacer on the top bolt with the federal pump on this car. I’d have to machine some off of the bottom bolt hole to get it like the rest. I just can’t figure our why it is so much different. Thanks
