I need a camshaft for my next 440 build. Does anyone have a good source I could talk to.
Thanks.

Is this next build for a restored stocker or race car or a street and strip hot rod?

Restored car, 67 GTX, stock crank and rods, 2355SP six pack style pistons, 440source aluminum heads, probably Holley SD intake, stock HP manifolds, 4-speed 3.54 gears. Looking for a smooth idle and mid range power. Also I want to use stock valvetrain so probably need a cam under .500.

In my 440 Valiant I have the Summit 6401 with Summit lifters. I'm really pleased with it and it works with my A/C.

I used the larger summit cam with a mild stall in an old 67 GTX I had, in fact I've used it in 3 BB and like it very much. It is 465/488.

I put together a combo almost exactly like yours, the exception being ported iron heads. I used the Lunati Voodo #702 with the Street Dominator and a 750 AFB and it is a sweet and responsive package. It worked very well with the HP manifolds. A real tire fryer.

The 466-488 is the 6401 cam, works great.

One of the HFT choices for your combo is the bigger Summit cam, which is hard to argue with for a variety of reasons.

Two other “name brand” options are the Crane H278, and one of my personal favorites for that particular type of application for the BB Mopar........ the Crower 271HDP.

You could also have something custom done, but in that type of application, that Crower is tough to beat.

FWIW the 1st time I used it it was in a stock 67 440. I added a CH4B intake, stock carb, Mani's stock exhaust 3.55's auto. car ran 13.68. I used another one in a 67 Coronet with maybe 9:1 stock 906 heads, headers, RPM intake 750 DP, Mopar 175k converter 3.91's Auto with shift kit. Can ran consistent 12.90 @ 104.

We put that Crower 271HDP in a 440 that we built for my Dad's street-only 1970 Coronet R/T. The engine build is very similar to OP's with Stealth heads, HP manifolds, "stockish"-looking aluminum CH4B intake. A 727 and 3.23 gears being notable differences from OP.

Literally could not be happier with the way the car runs. The power is incredible everywhere, but Idles with just the tiniest bit of chop so you can tell there is an aftermarket cam in there. Power brakes work fine if you have them.

Crower 271 HDP specs:
222/234 @ .050
.486/.496
112 CL

Sounds like a good choice even for a warm 383/400.

I use a Dwayne Porter flat tappet solid cam in my 440/493 eng in my 63 Sport Fury street car. Its been together over 9 years now and has never been back apart and still runs 10.80's on average days through the full exh and 10.70's on good air days. Its 264 & 270 @ .050 with .585 & .592 lift on a 110 LSA. I have it in the eng on a 106 ICL as he said to put it. Its been nothing but great service for me and still working good. He also nitrided the cam and I use the Comp EDM lifters. Ron

the summit 6401 would probably be best for your compression/cylinder pressure. the crane hmv278 is nearly identical. both have a 114lsa but the summit cam will close the intake valve a little later because it doesn't have as much advance ground into it. no performance upgrade cam can use stock springs. the stock springs get into coil bind quickly and will cause engine damage.

Thanks everyone, I am going to give the summit cam a try. I think I should be ok with the valve springs in the 440 source heads, they are good till .510 I think.

To the OP. To answer your initial question, this is one guy you should talk to.
