Running stamped R arms with mild HYD Roller?

Running stamped R arms with mild HYD Roller? - 05/14/20 01:45 PM

The "what went wrong with flat tappet cam" In the race thread just drives home the risk of flat tappet/ poor quality valve train in 2020. With a mopar the switch to roller is very expensive - we must pay high price up front for the conversion to avoid even higher price potential engine damage by circulating debris thru our new engine. Im all in. Conversion is around $1300. Im talking mild HYD roller like 235 ish DUR @ .050" So question- could healthy stamped steel rockers be used with a HYD roller with 235ish Dur @.050? I realize push rods would need to be custom made after measuring. The least expensive adjustable rocker arms I would trust (no ebay roller R arms for $100) are the iron adjustables that Mancini sells. They resemble the Cranes and 273 arms from the past and are priced under $275.

I would think the duration isn't the concern but the lift.

I would wonder about the spring pressure also. I've never retrofitted a roller cam into an older motor but I believe roller cams usually require stiffer valve springs and don"t know if the stamped rockers would handle the added spring pressure. I'm no expert so this is just something you might want to check out.

Very true that roller cams have alot more lift per DUR than flat tappet cams. This is what I will most likely run:

I run Crane ductile iron rockers with a hydraulic roller cam on an RB engine.

They work great!

Except those pesky stock roller cams

Even comparing aftermarket cams the increased lift per duration is minor.

Using the PO's advertised duration @ 0.050 number, 235, I compared two cams from the same manufacturer, Howards Cams Rattler for the B/RB.

0.050" more exhaust lift and 0.42" more intake lift are the only differences, well that and more than double the price for just the cam.

So I looked at the same cams but for the LA.

Exactly the same specs as the B/RB cams across the line.

What I think you means is the RATE of lift can be much quicker with a roller. It can open it faster and hold it longer than a flat tappet cam. But that isn't a spec cam makers really list.
