2101 Jeep w/Hemi - Timing Chain Issues Possibly! - 05/04/20 10:47 PM

I was talking with a friend today & his daughter bought a 2012 Jeep with the 5.7 Hemi when it was a year old with odometer in the teens. It now has about 80,000 miles, & is starting to have problems running right. Recent oil change had bits of metal in it. They took it in to a Goodyear repair center & had a couple of sensors replaced, but this has not fixed anything, the check engine light is back on. According to my friend, things are pointing to the timing chain. Truck is going in to a Dodge dealer in a day or two. I had a 2012 Challenger R/T with the 5.7L & remember reading about timing chain issues on the automatic vehicles - mine was a manual. Anybody know if there is a TSB for timing issues & possible component premature failure on this issue?

From everything I read, it was only some 2009 Challengers R/Ts with automatics and MDS. Beyond that they fixed the issue.

Camshaft/lifters is my first thought when you mention metal in the oil. The timing set failures we’ve seen left no doubt... they broke.

I think they said it was 2013 and down for timing chain breakage

Got any codes?

My SIL had issues with cam phasing due to the wrong oil and/or filter the quickie oil change place put in in Ram.

Step one of the TSB for those codes he had was to change the oil and filter then test.

That was his issue. But metal in the oil is something else.
