Unused Wiring When Adding EFI

Unused Wiring When Adding EFI - 04/16/20 05:00 PM

Based on an earlier post with the Holley Sniper and the ballast resistor wires, when an aftermarket EFI system is added, what is everyone doing with the existing Mopar wiring?

For example, If you were to use the Holley Sniper and the Hyperspark ignition system, what do you do with the old Mopar 5 pin control box wiring. The same can be said about the electric choke wire if you have one. We could take this a step further and talk about one wire alternators as well. Are you tucking the old wires away? Should the harness be cut open and these wires removed as far back as possible?

These EFI systems are sensitive to EMI, would these unused wires be a potential EMI source? Just questions as I ponder EFI while we quarantine.

My Fury is a classic FAST box and 1 wire alt. I removed all that OEM wiring, pulled it out of the bulkhead connectors, etc.
I'm slowly working on a 5.7 hemi in my Coronet, I'll pull all the OEM wiring out of that too.

I pull it all out and build a new engine harness. The new engine harness depends on where you mount things like the ignition box. On my Duster I only used a few of the pins in the firewall connector since a lot of that stuff went away.

I'm putting together a Microquirt setup on my 51 flathead. I completely rewired the car back in September using a hot rod 22 circuit harness. The EFI comes with it's own standalone harness and I will be removing the wiring I no longer need. But it's currently a points ignition so the wiring is minimal. Just remember that if you cut off the connectors and tape over the loose wires that they will still have power on them, so insulate the ends to prevent an inadvertent short.

I gutted everything I didn't use. Removed it right at the bulkhead connector.

its your car and choice, correct work
If your worrying about restoring the car later remove and save it (the entire motor harness)or tape it and save it in the car shruggy
