Rust protection?

Does anybody rustproof spray these cars? Most don’t live the life of a daily driver anymore. My specific issue, restoration was completed last fall, when I open the trunk I still get little bits of rust falling out. This was the best trunk lid (70’ Bee) I could find for the resto, seams were tight with no separation, skins were faded but corrosion free so we did not split them. Clean up, primer and paint made for a nice piece. So, would there be any problem to use a wand and spray some rust inhibitor between the lid skins? I don’t mind if it drips for a while, just don’t want to have to go looking for another one in a few years. Hope everyone is staying safe.

Yes, spray it, just use something thin to get all the way into the seams.

I would have sloshed epoxy primer in it before painting but too late now.

We go to places here to get the cars we drive in winter oil sprayed. Usually Rust Check. For the older stuff that isn't winter driven I get them done every few years also. There's always condensation that can get into those tight spots and under vehicles so better to be safe then sorry. But I also don't have anything restored or pristine top show prize type winners that you need everything spotless clean.

Thanks, is that 3M wax a thicker consistency? I was thinking of a Rust Check type product that runs a bit more.

I would blast some in between the skins, in the frame cavities but keep in mind. This stuff is messy. Wipe off the excess and prepare to keep on wiping. It will seep out for the rest of that car's life.

Sloshing that primer in before paint would have been a good idea🙄! This was my first time doing a resto of this depth, if I ever do another one I’ll do that, thanks!

the rust is falling out for a reason.

It is sixbbl, just small flakes that I think jarred loose as we handled the lid during the restoration and they have gotten less since the car was completed (only got 320mi on it last fall). I’m hoping some kind of product in there will slow down or stop any further decay. Thanks.

Put some Ospho in a spray bottle and go to town......
Won’t hurt the paint when it leaks out and will get in all the small areas.

We use POR 15. But a pump style pesticide sprayer from Lowes, Home Depot. Fill it with some POR 15 stick the nozzle in and drizzle it in. For a deck lid I'd remove it 1st. Be prepared for some to ooze out the seams. I do firewalls, doors, hoods, around the 1/4 panel lips. Leave doors open. We generally do this before painting. so when it runs out you can wipe. It STICKS WELL.and seals. Dries like concrete. We have stuff running around for 15 years or more on this method with no signs of rust thru. When you're done. Thru the sprayer away.

This is the product you want. It is designed for this exact application. I also use it inside my doors and where all hidden panel seams are such as where the trunk drops meet the quarters, where the wheel tubs meet the quarters, etc. This is what the OEM and collision repair industry does these days after primer/paint.

I used Fluid Film on my 2006 Dodge truck when I noticed some paint bubbling around the top of one the wheel wells on the pick-up bed.

It comes in a spray can and you can buy a flexible wand that attaches to the can. The wand allows you to reach into holes and openings and the nozzle atomizes the spray. When I did my truck, I put enough in so the excess dripped out for a few days. That has been about three years ago and the small paint bubbles are still there but no rust has appeared. I also treated the other side at the same time and no rust ever appeared there.

I had the same experience with Fluid Film: bottom of door seam was starting to rust, shot it with Fluid Film. Stopped it from getting worse.

As for the trunk lid, I'd hit it real hard with compressed air before doing anything.

how many cans of the eastwood stuff did it take ?
