Dimmable LED Dash Lights

Dimmable LED Dash Lights - 04/03/20 03:42 PM

Anyone know where to find LED 194 bulbs that are actually dimmable so that they can be used as dash lights? I'm currently putting the gauge pod together for my Coronet and I'd like to replace all the bulbs with LEDs while it's out and easiest to do.

On my boat I purchased a special dimer for LED lights. Not an easy way to integrate into our old mopars. May need to bypass and hide the LED dimmer under the dash.

The original incandescent bulbs were dimmed by reducing the voltage, LEDs cannot function the same. LEDs are dimmed by way of pulse-width modulation, sending a 12v signal in different duty cycles to reduce the output.

You would need to change your dimmer to one that provides a PWM output.

One that used the voltage coming from the stock dimmer to control the PMW would be ideal.

Used these in several Mopars. They plug right in and are dimmable via the stock headlight switch. Use same color LED as the lens in the dash

I used these in my 1970 Monte Carlo as well, plug and play with nothing additional. They dim, but a bit "choppy" compared to standard bulbs. They don't dim smooth, but do dim. Once they get so low, they turn off vs barely on like standard ones. Not sure if that explains it. I will see if I can get them to load onto youtube and share a link.

Instead of two separate links, here's my videos that are public. One shows on to off and another off to on. Bulb on left is standard and the other console and pod bulbs are LED. LED are way brighter for sure.

Good to know. What level of brightness for the LED's should we be looking for?

This is false. LEDs are Not all created equal! I have a factory 1970 dimmer in my Superbee and LED dash bulbs from superbrightleds.com and they dim perfectly smooth from dim to bright with zero stepping. I recommend going with the blue colored bulbs for the dimmable lights, red for brake, green for blinkers etc. the brightness is so much more intense that the white ones bleed through the lenses and make the colors look pale.

Of the eleven shown, which style did you use? With the choice of varying intensities and brightness I'd hate to re-invent the wheel!!

I wasn't aware of that. Nice.
