Hot rod power tour and a spool!

Hot rod power tour and a spool! - 03/09/20 05:05 PM

Hi all,

Well I am super excited to announce I am going to enjoy the hot rod power tour this year. My buddy and i are going to be taking my 69 big block dart on the trip. A couple of questions I was hoping to get advice on. First off should I get an electric fan for it? i mean it has a big aluminum rad and a shroud but can creep up heat wise in terrible traffic. The second question is I run a spool in it. My concern is how well is that going to hold up on a weeks worth of 150 plus miles? I guess I am wondering if I should change it out for limited slip. It is in a dana set up. Finally any tips or pointer would be great! I am a newbie at this!

Leave the spool in there...you won't notice it until you try to parallel park, lol.

On the cooling...do you currently run a belt driven fan? If so, leave it on there and maybe add an electric pusher fan on the front of the radiator. I ran a similar setup for years and it worked great. If it starts to get warm in traffic, turn on the electric fan.

I used to drive my car to/from the track with a spool, about 50 miles each way, maybe a little further. No issues. I did learn to hate driving on the street with a spool, but that was just personal preference.

There is tons of traffic, you can sit in traffic for hours on occasion. So be ware.

I’d put a suregrip in it ... I have a spool in that 84 Laser and that's a PITA pushing it around. Thats a GIVEN SITUATION to most and with that known ... UNLESS the rear tires are perfectly in circumference... those tires are going to be fighting each other everywhere you drive

x2 on the you can get caught sitting in the heat, you need to be confident in your car staying cool stuck in traffic for 15-20min.
You'll also be on a fair amount of sketchy roads and potential for all day rain. Think about how long the drive will take at 35mph nursing that spool in all day rain.

The tires you have on the car will determine how the car acts on wet pavement, not the spool.

how one can tolerate a spool also depends on the individual.
just the same as a real lumpy cam. some will say no problem, while others will have the opposite opinion.
i have no problem with either cam nor spool on the street, but your results can possibly be quite different !
just understand fully how a spool acts in all situations, know what your tolerance is, and act accordingly.
