Anyone reproduce M46 Scoops Barracuda scoops?

It does not have to be original, fiberglass is OK because it isn't going onto a show or resto car.

I have googled and looked but can't find a source.

Thanks

I believe Scott Harms reproduced them.
You might try calling him. Maybe there is another set around.
Otherwise, no one else has.

I saw a post where he was going to reproduce them but I didn't see them on his web site.

I will contact him but I don't need a show quality repop and he only does quality work. I just need a cool scoop for a street car.

Anybody know how many cars actually came with those? I’ve seen two cars, and I’ve looked at easily 500 different Plymouth e bodies over the years.

Those are mega rare!

I wonder how many were removed and trashed because people thought it was an aftermarket add-on.

The first time I saw them was in 80’s and I remember looking and thinking JC Whitney... they looked like you could just tear them off with one hand.

I doubt many people checked off M46 on the option box, and it appears that Plymouth didn’t put them on sales-bank cars either!

Just my opinion but they look out of place and stuck on as an afterthought. If it didn't come with them I'd leave them off.

Didn't know what they were so I had to look them up. Never seen them before in 40 years of looking at Cuda's. Pretty subtle but I think I'd go without.

supposedly there were 433 made with these scoops.

I have 23 on record at this time in my personal registry. Planning on putting up a web page at some point.

If anyone has any interest in these, here is most of the information I have about these cars.

Re: Anyone reproduce M46 Scoops Barracuda scoops? - 03/07/20 06:16 AM

That’s really cool Cuda hunter! 433.....pretty rare. Certainly it’s an item that as a car deteriorates, they tend to disappear. What do you know about some m46 cars getting the lower body blackout (and stripe line) and others just getting regular paint?
Posted By: M46 Cuda Hunter

Re: Anyone reproduce M46 Scoops Barracuda scoops? - 03/07/20 12:54 PM

AS far as I know there were none produced with no lower black out paint or stripes.
Some did however appear to have gotten standard argent grills. However I think they were supposed to get the blacked out grill's.

I've been looking for an example of the blue and white stripe from the beginning of my hunting and have yet to even see an example.
Mopar calls out both red and white stripe and blue and white stripe.

Do you know of an example with no black out from the factory?

Unfortunately, rare doesn't mean valuable. As they are lowly bh cars with only 383's, 318's and /6's they are usually cut up to save BS cars.

Re: Anyone reproduce M46 Scoops Barracuda scoops? - 03/07/20 05:22 PM

Of the two cars I saw, one had the blackout and one was regular paint, but I have know way of knowing if the regular paint wasn’t simply a repaint.

I remember thinking the lower blackout would be REALLY handy for rust repair.....no need to paint the whole car!

If I ever see another I’m going to pay more attention and ask more questions.

Right in front of the rear wheels, all the way down low. They weren’t offered on Cuda’s cause Cuda’s got the rocker gills. And maybe also cause they are just too cheesy for a Cuda.

They are simulated brake ducts.

Friend of mine had a M46 many years ago, really solid car with a lot of nice options 3.91s, racing mirrors, 15" wheels, rubber bumper...

I can see that. They are definitely an acquired taste. I just wanted something that would be a touch different but still be an original looking part.

I did contact Scott and he can make them but doesn't very often because of low demand. His price is pretty good, especially considering the great quality he does with all his work.

Cool thread for sure. I can say in all my years in the parts business scouring over 200 wrecking yards from 1984-1992 in the SW US (TX, OK, NM, AZ, CA, NV), we never saw these on any Barracuda - EVER.

For those of you that have not looked at the links I provided and read a ton of information I will post my list here.
Most of these cars are still in existence. A few of them are questionable as to whether they are gone now.
I have one more to add to this list and working on two others to add to the list. I will get them added soon. In the mean time,

If anyone has any information on an M46 I would love to investigate it. Doesn't have to be for sale. Several of the M46's I have found have been cloned to cuda's and no longer retain their scoops.

And to add to this, All M46's came with the black out lower portion of the body, blacked out rear tail panel with the m88 trim, blacked out valance and were supposed to also have a blacked out grill.

I'm no expert so if someone has something to contradict this I'd be glad to learn.

Re: Anyone reproduce M46 Scoops Barracuda scoops? - 03/08/20 05:21 AM

There are two 3/8 keeper nuts on the top of the scoops, one in the rear inner quarter behind the rear interior panel and one in the wheel well on the rear quarter.
The bottoms of these scoops were held on with phillips head screws. Most have 4 screws and corresponding holes and a few I've seen have 3 phillips head screws.

The keeper nut in the rear quarter appears to always be the worst preserved.

Not much to add here but that had an f8 green 70 383 barracuda that had those scoops. We all thought they were aftermarket but they were in the body shop crash books at the time, about 1981. Never saw another set. Sold that car, and it was pretty clean for rust at the time. Have no idea if it is still around, or the vin.

Re: Anyone reproduce M46 Scoops Barracuda scoops? - 03/09/20 03:43 AM

I wonder how long they were around the Chrysler parts warehouses? Around summer 1976, I started buying extra stuff for my 1970 Cuda. I remember buying a pair of front spoilers for the AAR - they were under $4.00/each. Bought a Cuda rear sway bar, which I eventually installed on my AAR around the mid-90's. I'm really curious how many service copies of these were in the parts system, & how much they cost, & when they were finally depleted?

Also, anybody know the Chrysler part #'s on these?

I have some old crash books, will take a look for part#. I bought a black aar grille in 1980, was one of the last few out there, had to pay a special handling charge to be sure to get it, total cost was $59.00. Wheel open mouldings were $4.95.

I would love to have a part number for these scoops. Thanks for looking.

59 bucks for a black aar grill. That's crazy. Seems they are the dear lords fortune now a days.

And also available in both 70 and 71, covertible and hardtop, and it looks like the 1970 was the only red white tape stripe year, not listed for 1971.

I think it was drafted up for '71 but not offered, from what I've seen.

What's strange is that this was offered for the Barracuda and not 'Cuda. All they had to do was delete the rockers when the option/package was ordered.

Here is a picture of the new reproduced scoops in a mold.

I was wrong, this is an original scoop in the first molding. Better molds now. My mistake. Old photo and I was corrected.

Sweet! I've not seen that picture before. Thanks for posting it!

I wonder what the package was that had the black out with the red and white stripe but no scoop. Very interesting.

Could that stripe have been a blue and white stripe? too bad no color pictures of that pilot car have surfaced.
