did the hoods have anything different than a stock hood for the scoops?
did they just take a stock hood and drill holes in it and added scoops?

I think the dual scoop (N96?) is a standard flat hood with the holes cut and drilled for the scoops, but would have had the under hood fiberglass Ram Air ducting, and matching air filter/base assembly. Interior would have the cable and handle to open/close the Ram air ducting.

The support structure (underside that you are referring to) is most likely the same BUT it received EXTRA cutouts (during the stamping process) that removed material where the scoups mount that allowed the air to flow from the scoups to the ductwork. If you compare the underside of a flat hood to an original N96 hood, it's obvious, not so much with the ductwork installed. A sharp eye will spot a converted flat hood due to this. Some of the cutouts lay flat against the hood skin and personally I see no way of removing the material to duplicate the factory cutouts without removing the top skin first. Anyone done this successfully? I'd wager 99% of all who looked at it would not know the difference. Just my .02, jess.

You can convert a flat hood to the N96 hood (I've done it before), but you need to know exactly where to cut the openings. When I did it, I made some paper templates using a damaged N96 hood as my guide. The scoops are not the difficult part - what's more challenging is cutting the underhood braces in the correct locations for the airbox. Some of the areas you need to cut are right up against the hood skin, so cut too deep and you have a hole in the hood.
In short, it can be done but you need to know exactly where to cut.

When I got a factory Ramcharger hood for my 69 I checked it against my original flat hood. I found that the notches and holes for the scoops and duct work were present on the support structure of the flat hood, just the scoop holes on the top were missing. A friend took my flat hood to replace his original Ramcharger hood that got ruined during blasting. I think that once the Ramcharger system became available they changed the support structure of all hoods.
