Anyone restore fuel tank sending units?

Anyone restore fuel tank sending units? - 01/17/20 03:04 PM

Based on some feedback I've received, today's fuel tank sending units are not reliable/as good as originals. Here are a couple of pics of my original sending units. The copper point/tip has worn over the years and now is impacting the ohm resistance. Anyone repair originals or know if there are rebuild kits available?

If I need to replace with a new one... any recommendations on brand?

Dad used these guys for his Pontiac sending unit, expensive but worth it when nothing else is available.

I’d fix that yourself. Solder it up, then use nail file to shape.

Agree. Fix it or have it fixed.

See the three links in the post below for repairing info.

You can fix that yourself. Solder is ok but very soft. Id solder a small piece of copper into the hole and then file the shape. Probably a 18th inch piece of 12 or 14 guage solid wire.

Look closely and you can probably take the arm off easily and then get the wiper to the bench for access.

I've used a company called Sending Unit Repair and Rebuild. Results are hit and miss.

One of the posts on A bodies board listed, the guy soldered a brass nail in the hole. that or a small brass screw would probably last a lot longer than the solder by itself work beer

I wonder how a copper pop rivet would work?
