PINHOLE RUST

Hi Guys,
Ever see the guy at the swap meet selling the metalic rod that he melts into the holes he made in a soda can?
What is is called ? Someone gave me some and I thought it could work on some minor pin holes. Wanted to google it to see how its used , but didnt know what its called .

Boy G, what I can say is there's a whole lot more rust on the inside of the panel if there's a pinhole on the outside.

This is a dime sized perforation of an otherwise rust free rear upper floor panel that has been media blasted on both sides, etch primed and sitting high and dry in my garage for the last 5 years. But thanks for your reply

i have repaired pin holes with brazing rod like you describe with aluminum.
if using brazing rod make sure you blast it really good. the flux required for the brass can make paint problems later.

or maybe try some acid core solder.

You can't use that crap on steel - its for aluminum only. Like the last poster said, you'll want to use a bronze brazing rod on that and even then, brazing rod is for joining metal, not "filling". I'd be surprised if you could get the base metal hot enough for the brazing rod to melt without it first blowing away on you - if there are pin holes you can be sure its pretty damn thin in the surrounding area !! Good luck.

And you're not going to fill a "dime size" hole that way.

I've seen a small portion of a roof that had pinholes leaded as a repair. But a hole the size of a dime is going to take more than even that.

Not to say whether or not it is appropriate for what you suggest, I do have some of the rod you mentioned. It is called M-F rod fluxless brazing rod. Sold by Gene Wagner R.R. 1 Box 456 Farmland, In. 47340 Ph. 765-4686931. I have had it a long time, so I don't know if the contact info is still good. Says on the label that it is for Zinc and Aluminum alloys.

I would assume the way he is wording it, the pin holes are all located in an area about the size of a dime on the quarter panel, not that the holes are the size of a dime.

At any rate, closing up pin holes is a challenge. The very thin metal will often blow through before the hole can be filled. Personally, I would create a patch for the quarter panel that is a little larger then the rust damaged area and weld in the patch. it will be a better more permanent repair. Having access to both sides of the quarter panel will make welding in a small patch an all steel repair that can be done with very little or no filler at all. trying to braze the damaged area may create more problems then it will fix.
