E body front end noise

E body front end noise - 01/05/20 10:45 PM

When I bounce the front end it sounds like a metal on metal screaching noise pretty close to the front. Could the strut rod bushing be worn bad enough to cause the washer to rub on the kmember? Dry torsion bars? No other noticeable ill effects. It's quit possible that the entire front suspension is oem.

Thanks, I've never been a front end guy.

I'd believe the strut rods, if the bushings look old its certainly possible.

I would also check the clearance between the t-bar pivot and the two halves of the lower control arms, if it has excessive clearance they will make noise while driving too. If that's the case the fix is to take them out and "pinch" them and re-weld the bump stop mount.

Could be a number of things...bottom shock mount, lower control arm pivot shaft, strut rod. If you suspect its oe, it's probably a good idea to go through the entire front end. You could end up finding multiple issues. May find the issue before it turns into something else/ruins something. If you mark the upper control arm adjusters and don't change the end link adjusters, depending on what needs changed you may not need an alignment.

Id be willing to bet that you have more than a few dried out disintegrated bushings. Lower control arm are notorious

Look at the front strut rods where they go into the K-member - look to see that the area(s) of the K-member are not broken. I had this condition on a '74 Cuda.

Anybody know a good frontend guy in N.E. Tennessee tricities area? 10 years ago I would have broke out the fsm and bought or made the necessary tools. Now I don't know. Age, arthritis and a bad back may have caught up with me. I'll get it up in the air and see I can see anything broken but I think all the rubber parts are probably disintegrating. They could be over 50 years old. The kmember could in fact be broken. It is not original to the car and looked like it had probably been lightly hit before it was installed by previous owner. If I have to rebuild the entire frontend I guess I will looking for a better k as well

Check the frame rails where the k frame bolts to. Could be cracked or rusted out

Good point. I'll check that close. It just occured to me that I should also check torque on the kmember to frame bolts.
I think I'll put it up on ramps and see if I can listen and feel from underneath while my wife bounces it a little to make it squeek. I still think it is coming from the area of the strut rods but I'll also look hard at the frame and kmember while I'm under there. Thanks to everyone for their ideas on where to look.

mine is cracked right under the k frame bolt and it squeaks and creaks...time for a new frame or 2

Is it the frame rail or kmember that is cracked?
