Where to install an electric fuel pump?

I'm going to install a Carter P4594 electric fuel pump and want to know where you guys put it. I'm looking for any pictures of a 70 B Body with a Dana 60. I'm thinking about just above the fuel sending unit but want to see some pics. thanks.

You should always mount an electric pump BELOW the fuel tank normal fluid level. They do not like to suck as much as push.

I've mounted electric pumps in different locations depending on the car and its purpose:
Rear body crossmember on the drag car, R/R frame rail forward of the tire on a couple, on the rear shock crossmember on another couple.
One of the shock-crossmember cars was my Hemi RR. That pump lasted forever there & worked.
It's true that they push better than suck, but never had a problem.

Make sure and mount it as far back, closes to the tank, as possible and get the pump entrance even with or lower than the bottom of the tank I've mounted pumps on the inside of the right rear sub frame as well as on that same subframe rail behind the stock tank in a Duster that had a center mounted sump welded into the bottom of it for drag racing
That pump was a Magna Fuel ProSstar 275

I tried mounting a pump up above the axle in front of the tank but no matter what i did, could not get that pump to prime and pull fuel. I moved the pump to the inside of the pass frame rail next to the tank and a bit lower, and instant prime. But, i have a friend that mounted it up there and has no problems. Mine are 68 and 73 b-bodies.

I had issues getting a prime when I had a pump on the trunk frame rail. Do yourself a favor and get an in tank setup, it's worth it.

I'm always surprised by how many cars come in the shop with rear axle bashing the fuel pump or filter. Try the frame rail below fuel level in tank, away from exhaust. not a lot of room. We try to use a hi flow mechanical pump or an Aeromotive in tank unit. A side benefit is the Aeromotive units are quiet!

I mount mine on the shock cross member just ahead of the sender/pick-up. Have done that on several cars over the decades and the one on the Cuda now has been there for 15 years or so. And since my cars are street cars I don't want to hear that pump. So I mount it on a piece of rubber. Usually a piece cut out of a tire. Lasts forever that way and really knocks down the noise.

Any pics? The pump is only to help start up when sitting for more than a month.

I take a small funnel or syringe and fill the float bowls when the old toy cars that have set long enough to be hard starting

I don't mind doing that but I don't like to store a gas container in my garage. That's just me.

I have a small carter electriclpump mounted all the way up front on my Warlock, right near the factory mechanical pump.


It's been that way for two years without issue. It was a quick/easy install for a truck that doesn't get used much and I figured that I can go a more complicated route if I needed to. Haven't needed to.

I have my Holley pump right in front of my stock gas tank by the sending unit above the rear diff. Its not lower then the tank as its actually even with it or near the top of the tank. Its not many places to mount it lower then the stock tank. It pulled fuel instantly and has never ben a problem running in the 10's with a 3/8 line. I will say whenever I install a new electric pump I always put a bit of engine oil in the pump so it does not start dry and helps it seal well when first pulling fuel into it. I have never had a problem with the Holly pump mounted like that. Ron

There are a few brands of electric pumps that will effectively lift fuel from above the tank. Most will not, and or will cavitate if mounted that way. Less is more when it comes to lifting fuel above tank level. I use a 2 speed Fuel Labs pump mounted at the top of my tank hooked to a pair of Holley Hydramats.. The high speed switch kicks on when the secondaries open using a micro switch. The pump runs at a cooler low speed on the primaries

What he said! Same deal used a holly Blue Pump and Fram filter and housing. Drag race and street drove that thing for close to 10 years it had no issues!

Agreed. However I have purchased two vehicles that had electric fuel pumps mounted up high in the engine compartment and never had any issues with them.

I put one right in front of the passenger side spring hanger, easy access and worked good for ages.
