SSBC brakes - 12/18/19 03:27 AM

I've posted this elsewhere but not having any luck so far.

Does anyone know what OEM application(s) the brake rotors and calipers cross over to on their A153 kit? Hmm, might be good to know what hoses cross over to as well. I have confirmed the D11 brake pads but that's it.

I have a still new in the box conversion for my '68 Barracuda. I haven't installed as I have been worried about replacement parts since SSBC is no more. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: SSBC brakes - 12/19/19 04:28 AM

I have the A156 kit on my 64 Sport Fury and I researched 1966 Mustang front pads. I also have their rear disc kit on a dana 60 and they call for 1977 Lincoln Versailles (Granda or Monarch) pads. I do not have the force 10 calipers.

This is why I always warn against after market conversions. Hope you get it sorted out.

Small bolt pattern? Why not track down an oem Kelsey Hayes set?

You can do a mustang rotor swap and move to the larger bolt pattern as well.

I'll have to give that a shot.

Why? Because the brand new, in the box, dual bolt pattern, SSBC kit came with the car when I bought it.

Re: SSBC brakes - 12/20/19 04:33 PM

I'm going to guess the rotors were off the shelf 4.5" pattern re-drilled for the 4" pattern. What there original application was may be a bit more difficult.
Sometimes there are casting numbers on the rotors and or calipers to give you a start. Pictures of the calipers may help. They typically liked using GM single piston calipers but not always

Don't know if their facebook page is still active but that may be another potential source of info. beer

I have the 4 piston aluminium caliper fronts . Pad is db11 67 mustang . I asked re rotor but ssbc werent telling , said their own specific . Didnt help i am in Oz , wasnt going to buy off rotors off them . They did note minimum wear was to bottom of slots .
That caliper got discontinued for a iron version , pad ends dug into aluminium .
Next around wil be willwood

That's a terrible choice. Their customer service is beyond horrid. Most unprofessional company I ever dealt with in the automotive world.

I took off my Wilwoods and put Aerospace on the street car and Strange on the race car.

I hate to hear that, however I run a 20 year old willwood kit on the front of my car and last year I put a kit on the rear when i swapped to a Dana 60. Everything fits great and works great so I have had no need for customer service.

The hardware is not bad when it fits but when it don't and its their fault watch out!

67 mustangs also used 4 piston calipers, might be worth doing a comparison. Again look for any numbers cast or stamped into the components. We run into this on a semi regular basis when a customer buys a car and gets no documentation. We then have to become detectives frown

The chances of you wearing the rotors out are probably pretty slim unless you road race or drive a lot. have you contacted Summit yet ? beer

I hate having to do that. Yeah, that's why I try to document all mods on my cars or bikes so, if down the road I decide to sell, the new owner isn't screwed trying to figure things out.

True or at least it's going to a be long while. Car will be a somewhat daily driver and occasionally a car show or trip to the strip. I just always worry about replacement parts! I haven't contacted Summit yet.

Ran Wilwood for last 25 years, no issues.

Pro Stocks run them, can't be all bad...

Re: SSBC brakes - 12/22/19 05:58 PM

If you believe the parts will be hard to locate then maybe sell the whole kit and start over?

If it were mine I would go with oem 4 piston calipers and then new rotors, or early mustang rotors if you want the larger bolt pattern. All these items are serviceable thru Rock Auto, local parts store, ebay, etc.

Re: SSBC brakes - 01/02/20 01:09 AM

I too have the A153-1 kit on my '71 Dart GT and I'm also wondering about replacement rotors. I can't find any part number/cross reference information about them either.

Since this is a kit, would it be safe to assume the rotors are off the shelf from X vehicle (versus manufactured specifically for this kit)? And, because the kit offers the use of either the small bolt pattern or the large bolt pattern wheels are there any production vehicles that have the dual bolt pattern? Or, would SSBC would have drilled the rotors for the "other" bolt pattern?

A majority of the Mopar SSBC front and rear disc brake kits utilize early-late Ford Mustang/ Lincoln/ Mercury/Turbo Coupe Thunderbird components, stock or modified for the SSBC kits

A little research will yield you the components you require, you can source the rotors for your application from Summit Racing PN#s BR61053 for "stock replacement" rotors, if you have/desire drilled/slotted rotors PN# BR61053LC

Note: the Summit rotors will be in the stock Ford/L/M 4.5" BC, you'll need to have them drilled for the Mopar 4" BC depending on your SSBC A153-/1/2/3 kit designation (application is 1965-67 Ford/Mercury)

Calipers are 65-67 Ford Mustang Kelsey Hayes 4 piston, readily available from many sources, if you have the SSBC proprietary cast 4 piston aluminum calipers your SOL (source:used/rebuilt/Ebay/etc)...however the Ford 65-67 Mustang KH 4 piston calipers are an bolt on alternate source

Pads are D11 or Bendix SBC11

The rotors pictured above are the early mustang style based on the holes cast around the outside.

Re: SSBC brakes - 01/02/20 09:00 PM

A customer put SSBC on his Charger, the car doesn't stop with two feet on the pedal! Another friend has them, similar issue. Do Not Use! Incidentally, the systems had had extensive hours invested to figure out why, master sizing, master replaced anyhow, new lines, prop valve, pressure tested at wheels etc, Put Wilwood kits on and stops very well.
* I do not buy 4 piston stuff for front, pads are way too small for a street or road race car - IMHO

I recently had to call Wilwood about incorrect packaged parts, they were very helpful and fixed issue right away.

Re: SSBC brakes - 01/02/20 10:48 PM

I read on the internets that the mustang 4 piston calipers are slightly different than the mopar ones. Something about the bleeder valve or brake line holes not being in the same locations? At any rate the piston and seal kits are the same so the calipers can be rebuilt with mustang parts.
